The Redstone Room

Friday, January 13, 8 p.m.

For one of my New Year's resolutions, I vowed to stop moaning in print about those who've earned nationwide acclaim and achieved considerable professional success despite being many, many years younger than me. Then, as one of my first What's Happenin' assignments for 2012, I was asked to write about 22-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist Samantha Fish.

Well, I suppose three days was a pretty good run.

Dr. Zhivegas @ Quad-Cities Waterfront Convention Center"Happy holidays, Jeff!"

"And happy holidays to you, Mike. You seem to be in a good mood."

"That I am! I just finished my last writing assignment of the year, and am about to take off to do the last of my Christmas shopping!"

"So the What's Happenin' pages are done, then?"

"That they are! As usual for this time of year, we're treating readers to our special centerspread What's Happenin' on New Year's Eve, which gives the lowdown on the area venues that are hosting live music, karaoke, or DJs prior to midnight on January 1. We include information on what time the music starts, whether there's a cover charge, and what New Year's treats - party favors, appetizers, champagne - folks can look forward to, along with venue phone numbers and street and Web addresses for added convenience. Plus, it goes without saying that all of the bands and venues are also listed on the Live Music pages in the back of the Reader."

First Presbyterian Church of Davenport

Saturday, December 10, 4 p.m.

Performing in a December 10 concert at Davenport's First Presbyterian Church, the latest guest in Quad City Arts' Visiting Artist Series is acclaimed pianist/composer Mike Garson, and according to his Web-site bio at MikeGarson.com, he's a musician "to whom the word 'no' is quickly transformed into the word 'now.'" Which is funny, because that's exactly what happens whenever I say 'no' around here ... although it's always my editor Jeff who transforms it into 'now.'

Do you ever experience those days where you feel like you've done nothing significant with your life? If not, allow me to say (a) congratulations, and (b) you might want to consider attending Augustana College's December 1 presentation with Eboo Patel. I guarantee, you'll feel like the rest of us in no time.

Saturday, November 19, 7 p.m.

The latest in Augustana College's lineup of visiting artists is a Dove Award-winning musician who will appear in a special concert titled An Intimate Evening with Mark Schultz. I should mention that this event isn't to be confused with An Intimate Evening with Mike Schulz, which is also great fun, but features a lot more griping about Hollywood reboots and surcharges for 3D glasses.

The latest presentation in the Galvin Fine Arts Center's Performing Arts Series will take place on November 5, and according to the L.A. Daily News, the act booked for the St. Ambrose University venue "can work up some powerful emotions, make a religion out of lonely introspection, and even crack the occasional Canada joke." And no, it's not President Obama.

The Redstone Room

Sunday, October 16

For the latest presentation in Polyrhythms' Third Sunday Jazz Series, the Redstone Room will host an October 16 workshop and concert with the lauded Chicago musicians of the Chris Greene Quartet, whose saxophone-playing front man was described by DownBeat magazine as "a stupid-funky tenor and soprano player." Ironically, that's exactly how people described me in my youth. Except it was in regard to my involvement in choir. And they didn't say "player." Or "funky." I don't really want to talk about it.

A living-room set. Four well-dressed characters. Conversation about careers and families and relationships. Basically a play like any other ... except for the projectile vomiting.

Adler Theatre

Saturday, September 17, 7:30 p.m.

Playing Davenport's Adler Theatre on September 17, the lauded country stars of Little Big Town - Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook - have been with the group since its 2002 CD debut, have publicly admitted to being dear friends, and are all currently married with children, with Fairchild and Westbrook married (with a child) to each other.

No musician turnover over the years? No incessant squabbling? Stable relationships? What the hell kind of abnormal band is this?!

You know how there are particular bands and performers you listen to when you're happy, and others that you listen to when you're sad, and others that you listen to when you're stuck in road-construction traffic and people are honking their horns and refusing to merge correctly and you need to hear something soothing before you rip the freakin' steering wheel off with your bare hands?!? (Not that, you know, any of us in the Quad Cities has ever experienced that feeling.)
