The Weather Station

Rozz-Tox

Sunday, October 14, 8 p.m.

In acknowledging the talents of Canadian folk singer/songwriter Tamara Lindeman - whose musical outfit The Weather Station plays Rock Island's Rozz-Tox venue on October 14 - Soundproof Magazine raved, "When you try to describe this woman and the music she makes, words fail."

Challenge accepted, Soundproof!

The Redstone Room

Friday, September 28, 8 p.m.

The independent pop/folk/rock musician John Common will play the Redstone Room on September 28, and according to his Wikipedia listing, the man was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and honed his talents at numerous venues throughout the United States.

According to his biography at JohnCommon.com, however, the singer/songwriter was actually born in a small finishing village in Uoraguwaogo, Portugal, and mastered his craft performing bar mitzvahs in Tel Aviv, Hindu weddings in Calcutta, and "a small punk club in the Netherlands."

Damn that Wikipedia. Can't trust it for a second.

Sunday, September 23, 7:30 p.m.

On September 23, the Redstone Room will host a concert with Royal Southern Brotherhood, a group whose self-titled debut CD, released this past May, was praised for its "exciting mix of down-home Cajun-creole funky blues and good old Southern rock" by CoolAlbumRevue.com. Which begs the question: If you're being reviewed on a Web site called CoolAlbumRevue.com, are the specifics of your album's coolness even necessary?

Posing Beauty in African-American Culture

Figge Art Museum

Saturday, September 8, through Sunday, November 4

According to the famed English poet John Keats, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." According to its Web site, the Figge Art Museum's new exhibit Posing Beauty in African-American Culture runs from September 8 through November 4.

Such a dirty, rotten liar, that Keats.

Next to Normal

District Theatre

Friday, August 24, through Sunday, September 9

Occasionally, I'll recommend an emotionally wrenching movie or play to friends and family members, and invariably, after they've sobbed their way through the entertainment, they'll hit me with "Why didn't you tell me I'd need tissues for that thing?!" Well, the District Theatre is opening Next to Normal on August 24, and while I haven't yet seen this musical on-stage, its Broadway soundtrack is also emotionally wrenching. If you listen to the CD, though, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't require tissues. It requires a freakin' squeegee.

The country-music superstars of the Zac Brown Band will play the i wireless center on August 3, and among the group's output is the 2012 CD You Get What You Give. Considering what the band has been giving over the years, it's no wonder they've been getting so much!

Rozz-Tox

Friday, July 27, 9 p.m.

Discussing the widely acclaimed musician who will perform a special concert at Rock Island's Rozz-Tox on July 27, the legendary singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb is quoted as saying, "I have no doubt that in a very short time, John Fullbright will be a household name in American music."

I can't imagine how Webb knew that Fullbright would eventually be highlighted in the Reader's What's Happenin' pages, but let's get cracking on that household-name thing!

Thursday, July 12, 8 p.m.

On July 12, the Rock Island Brewing Company will present a special Thursday-night two-fer, with sets by co-headliners The Henry Clay People and Futurebirds. Or, as I like to think of the musical mash-up that'll result: The Henry Clay Pigeons.

Sorry. Horrible joke. It's really humid today.

XanaduTheatre

Xanadu

The District Theatre

Friday, June 29, through Saturday, July 14

In the new musical at Rock Island's District Theatre, California chalk artist Sonny Malone finds himself frustrated with the design for his latest sidewalk mural, and plans to commit suicide. Viewing his distress from Mount Olympus, the muse Clio decides to travel to Earth to cheer him up, disguised as an Australian roller-skater in leg warmers. Upon meeting Clio, Sonny is inspired to open a lavish roller disco, an idea that doesn't sit well with Clio's evil sisters Melpomene and Calliope. Eventually, a retired-clarinetist-turned-real-estate-broker gets involved, and then the winged horse Pegasus, and then Zeus ... and if you think this sounds like the stupidest storyline ever conceived for a stage production, I couldn't agree more.

Race you for tickets.

The Split LiversMusic

The Split Livers

Rock Island Brewing Company

Wednesday, June 13, 8 p.m.

On June 13, the Rock Island Brewing Company presents a concert with the recently formed collaborative duo the Split Livers, which I like to think of as the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of the acoustic-punk bluegrass scene. My reasons for this are twofold. (1) Like peanut butter and chocolate, the Split Livers blends two separate ingredients - Wayne Gottstine of Split Lip Rayfield and Danny Barnes of Bad Livers - to form one signature taste. (2) Have you ever had a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup? Those things are freakin' awesome.
