The Acharnians

Lincoln Park

Saturday, July 27, through Sunday, August 4

Hard as it is to believe, summer's almost over. And I know it's almost over because it's already time for Genesius Guild's annual, end-of-summer slapstick in Rock Island's Lincoln Park - which, this year, is Guild founder Don Wooten's take on the Aristophanes comedy The Acharnians.

Genesius Guild presents CoriolanusTheatre

Coriolanus

Lincoln Park

Saturday, July 13, through Sunday, July 21, 8 p.m.

In the Cole Porter stage classic Kiss Me, Kate, a musical largely based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, a pair of goofy mobsters sing a comedic ditty titled "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." The song offers a how-to guide on the wooing of women through knowledge of the Bard's works, and one set of lyrics transpires thusly:

"If she fights when her clothes you are mussing,

What are clothes? Much Ado About Nussing.

If she says your behavior is heinous,

Kick her right in the Coriolanus."

Just thought I'd get that gag out of the way early, because it would be impossible to discuss Genesius Guild's forthcoming production seriously if you spent this whole piece thinking, "Hee hee hee ... anus ... ."

Figge Art Museum

Saturday, June 29, through Sunday, October 6

Beginning on June 29, Davenport's Figge Art Museum will be house a special, site-specific installation by Juan Angel Chavez, and on the venue's Web site, the Chicago-based artist's intention with the piece is stated thusly: "In his use of refuse and other found objects, Chavez seeks to draw attention to socially deviant behavior and other 'unwanted' activities."

The man could've saved himself a lot of trouble, and a lot of refuse, merely by peeking in the windows of the nearby Reader offices, but I won't tell him if you won't.

Do you consider yourself a big fan of the hip-hop ensemble Souls of Mischief? Do you consider yourself such a big fan that you could recite every word in the group's 93 'til Infinity album by memory? Then prove it, smart guy! Prove it!

What I mean is that you can prove it if you attend Souls of Mischief's June 22 concert at the Rock Island Brewing Company, and mouth along while the artists perform 93 'til Infinity in its entirety. Sorry if that "Prove it!" came off a little confrontational. I would've followed it with a wink-y emoticon, but I think that looks kinda stupid in print.

If you're looking to enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment and cultural enrichment, I urge you to take this article's information to heart. Why? Because I've got principals.

No, that's not a misspelling. What I mean is that I have news about a special concert featuring Jessica Warren-Acosta, the principal flutist for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and Marguerite Lynn Williams, the principal harpist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. If I actually had principles, I wouldn't make you suffer through lame What's Happenin' puns every two weeks.

The Redstone Room

Friday, May 24, 8 p.m.

Blues, soul, and gospel musician Joe Louis Walker, who plays Davenport's Redstone Room on May 24, was born on December 25, 1949. If you're hip to the man's talents through recordings, concerts, or TV appearances, I think you'll agree that we all got a Christmas present that day.

First, there was Bennifer. Then there was Brangelina. Then there was TomKat. And now, with their Redstone Room concert scheduled for May 4, local audiences will be treated to the artistic gifts and personal charisma of America's latest celebrity super-couple: Bruce Robinson and Kelly Willis. Or, using the nickname I prefer, BruceWillis!

Wow, that's a terrible nickname ... . Let me reconsider that one and get back to you ... .

On April 19, the Rock Island Brewing Company hosts an evening with The 4onthefloor, the Minneapolis-based blues-rock outfit noted for all of its songs being written in 4/4 time, and for each of the group's musicians playing a bass drum. Band member James Gould has called this format "limiting in a way that really forces you to be more creative." Which is exactly how I describe my writing talents ... but usually without that "creative" part.

Wayne "The Train" Hancock

Rock Island Brewing Company

Saturday, April 6, 9:30 p.m.

Acclaimed country musician Wayne "The Train" Hancock plays a Rock Island Brewing Company concert on April 6, and you'll need to be at least 21 to attend. However, all ages are welcome to learn about the artist's gifts right here! AllMusic.com, for instance, calls Hancock "arguably the finest country traditionalist working the 21st Century country scene." And Scram Magazine, which describes Hancock's 2003 CD Swing Time as "a great goddam live album," raves that Hancock "imbues his material with the kind of I-don't-give-a-f--k edge that pushes each and every one of these 'old-fashioned songs' right up into your face."

Hmm. Given the language, maybe you should be at least 21 to read this article, too.

It seems to have taken forever to get here, but guess what, folks? Spring officially starts this week! The sun is shining! Birds are singing! And over at the QC Theatre Workshop, the season's arrival is being celebrated by our area's classical-theatre troupe the Prenzie Players with angry gods, family dishonor, rebellion, treachery, imprisonment, suicide ... !

Wow, Prenzies. Like a nice production of Barefoot in the Park would've killed ya?
