$6,500 awarded to complete fundraising effort for Gov. Samuel Merrill mausoleum restoration

(DES MOINES)  Today, at the Administration’s weekly press conference, Gov. Branstad announced that Patriot Outreach, Inc. would be the first award recipient of private funds used to promote historical projects around Iowa.  Jonas Cutler, project director from Patriot Outreach joined Gov. Branstad in the announcement.

The first award in the amount of $6,500 is being granted to finalize the fundraising effort to restore former Iowa Governor Samuel Merrill’s mausoleum in Woodland Cemetery.  For more information on the project, please click here.

“As a student of history, these are exactly the types of historical projects that I envisioned promoting through the Iowa History Fund,” said Branstad.  “I’m pleased that we are able to make this contribution today to restore the legacy and respect of Samuel Merrill, a former Iowa Governor and civil war veteran.”

In December 2015, Gov. Branstad established the Iowa History Fund as a nonprofit organization to promote Iowa history.  Gov. Branstad is an Iowa history buff whose regular reading includes the Iowa History Journal magazine and various works on historical Iowa figures and events. With a passion for Iowa history and a keen interest in giving back to the state that has given him the honor of ascending from a rural Iowa farm to the governorship, Gov. Branstad will work through the Iowa History Fund to identify and provide resources to efforts across the state of Iowa that preserve Iowa history for future generations.
