WEST BRANCH, IOWA—Bright colors and intricate designs adorn the newest exhibit piece at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site (NHS) visitor center. The Birthplace Centennial Quilt pays tribute to National Park units in all 50 states, with each square representing a different park.
The quilt project was overseen by Tami Urmie and Tara Langley of Cotton Creek Mill Quilt Shoppe, located in West Branch, IA. Quilters from the area received a folder containing a square pattern and information about which National Park the square was to represent. The quilters themselves chose the colors and fabric that they thought would best embody the park on their square. Once all the squares were completed, Urmie pieced the quilt together.
“This quilt is a great example of a community coming together to support and celebrate the National Parks,” says Superintendent Pete Swisher. “The variety of colors and patterns exemplify the uniqueness of all our parks.”
The Birthplace Centennial Quilt will be on display through early December in the visitor center. Visitors can see the patterns up close, and utilize the corresponding guide that explains which park each square represents.
Last year the National Park Service launched its “Find Your Park” campaign which began a two year celebration commemorating its first 100 years of preservation and service to the public. “Find Your Park” is aimed at getting people out to experience all their national parks have to offer and to share their favorite stories about National Parks.
