Comedy

The Bob & Tom Comedy All-Star Tour

The Capitol Theatre

Friday, February 27, 7:30 p.m.

Bob and TomI've got one for ya.

How do you get seven comedians to screw in a light bulb?

You buy a ticket to The Bob & Tom Comedy All-Star Tour at Davenport's Capitol Theatre on February 27, wait outside the stage doors after the show is over, and ask them, really politely, "Could you all help me screw in a light bulb?"

Hey, comedy's their job, not mine.

MudvayneFormed in Peoria in 1996, the multi-platinum-selling prog metal band Mudvayne plays Davenport's Capitol Theatre on February 10, and in an interview with MTV's Jon Weiderhorn, drummer Matthew McDonough said, "Anybody who follows the band closely knows that there has never been a consistent image with us."

And the award for Understatement of the Decade goes to ... !

Music

The Last Tour

The Capitol Theatre

Saturday, January 24, 8 p.m.

The Last TourImmortalized in Don McLean's "American Pie," the date of February 3, 1959, will forever be remembered by rock 'n' roll historians and fans as "the day the music died," when the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper crashed north of Clear Lake, Iowa. Five days beforehand, though, the music was still very much alive in the Quad Cities, as this trio of legends brought their Winter Dance Party tour to Davenport's Capitol Theatre for two shows, rocking audiences with such classics as "Peggy Sue," "La Bamba," and "Chantilly Lace."

Cherie Sampson's River Spirit of Life Ice PieceDid you know there are Reader readers who don't know that the What's Happenin' pages can also be found online? Just thought I'd mention it.

In other news, January 13 marks the opening of a new art exhibition at St. Ambrose University's Catich Gallery titled On Becoming, showcasing works by Midwestern artists Gillian Brown and Cherie Sampson. Running through February 13, the month-long exhibit will feature selections that employ video projection on sculpture, a technique that gives stationary objects the appearance of movement, and that allows for the presentation of some truly unique imaginings.

Family Groove Company"Happy Holidays, Jeff!"

"Happy Holidays to you, Mike."

"Guess what I'm giving you for your gift this year!"

"A moratorium on those annoying Jeff-and-Mike dialogues?"

"Ha ha! Good one, Jeff! No. But I'm going to make your job for the Reader's end-of-year issue so much easier - I'm giving you only one What's Happenin' article to edit instead of five!"

New Year's at Noon 2007Strange as it may seem, there are some people who would love to ring in the new year with a festive party who can't quite manage to stay awake until midnight. But enough about me. If you'd like to celebrate the arrival of 2009 with your kids, yet are concerned about them (or perhaps you) nodding off before the ball drops, Bettendorf will be offering a sensible December 31 alternative - the shouting of "Happy New Year!" at 12 p.m. - at two of the city's family venues.
