Frontier Ruckus

The Redstone Room

Thursday, November 12, 8:30 p.m.

The first full-length CD by the indie-folk musicians of Frontier Ruckus - playing Davenport's Redstone Room on November 12 - was 2008's The Orion Songbook, and the band's press materials state that the "Orion" of the title is pronounced "OR-ee-un." Of course, I live in the Quad Cities, so I wasn't aware that there was another way to pronounce it.

"Hey, Shawn!"

"What's happenin', Mike?"

"That's funny. I'm actually here to chat about the What's Happenin's. I'm writing one on the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, playing Iowa City's Englert Theatre on November 7, and I thought we could discuss the layout. I know we don't have a lot of space."

"Well, you do tend to ramble in those things."

Galvin Fine Arts Center

Friday, October 23, 7:30 p.m.

Described by Time Out New York as "the fearless standard-bearers in their field," the Klezmatics will perform at St. Ambrose University's Galvin Fine Arts Center on October 23. Mixing traditional folk stylings with everything from jazz to Latin rhythms to punk, the group will no doubt deliver an exceptional evening of live entertainment, but I'm thinking that the Klezmatics' career arc would also make for a pretty kick-ass movie.

Thursday, October 8, 5 p.m.

Some newspapers co-sponsor walk-a-thons and fun runs; some help raise money for disease research and scholarships. Leave it to your friends at the River Cities' Reader to co-sponsor an event in which attendees are encouraged to drink ... at the library.

Promise of the Real featuring Lukas Nelson

The Redstone Room

Tuesday, September 29, 8:30 p.m.

Conceived on a tour bus and born on Christmas Day, Lukas Nelson would seem born into a country song even if he wasn't the son of country-Western legend Willie Nelson. Yet Lukas went on to embrace not only the music of his upbringing, but rock, folk, and the blues as well, and audiences can expect a bit of each when Nelson and his Promise of the Real outfit play their September 29 concert at Davenport's Redstone Room.

Rock Island Public Library

Wednesday, September 9, 7 p.m.

"Yid Vicious was formed in 1995 in Madison, Wisconsin, in order to ameliorate the woeful dearth of klezmer in America's otherwise pleasant heartland. Klezmer is Yiddish folk music, music for dancing and celebrating, and no band has caused for dancing and celebrating than Yid Vicious. Except Kool & the Gang, when they had that hit single about celebrating good times, come on; that caused lots of celebrating. But Yid Vicious is next, right after Kool & the Gang."
