The Judds: The Last Encore

i wireless Center

Sunday, November 28, 7 p.m.

By now, I'm presuming, we all pretty much know that Wikipedia shouldn't be taken as the final word on any given subject. But I'll admit that I was still taken aback by the very first sentence in its entry on a legendary musical act: "The Judds were an American country-music duo composed of Naomi Judd and her daughter, Wynnona Judd." May I ask, Wikipedia: What the hell's with the past tense?!

Maggie BrownMusic

Third Sunday Jazz featuring Maggie Brown

The Redstone Room

Sunday, November 21

"There is a lot of great music out here," says performer Maggie Brown in a recent Chicago Defender interview. "It is not popularized. It's not going to come to you on the radio, or on a CD. You have to look for it."

Well, folks, you can stop looking; great music can be found at Davenport's Redstone Room on November 21. Appearing as the latest guest in Polyrhythms' monthly Third Sunday Jazz Series, the Chicago-based Maggie Brown will present a 3 p.m. jazz workshop and a 6 p.m. concert of bound-to-be-thrilling solos, underscoring why the Defender describes her as "a phenomenal artist who has loads of individual style."

Tomas KubinekMusic

Tomáš Kubínek & Orchestra Iowa: Professor Kubínek Meets the Symphony

Iowa City West High School

Friday, November 5, 7:30 p.m.

Czech-born entertainer Tomáš Kubínek, who has displayed his ingratiating talents everywhere from Tokyo's Asahi Hall to Broadway's New Victory Theatre, is a multi-hyphenate if ever there was one: a musician-comedian-magician-director-vaudevillian-inventor-clown-award-winning-housefly-catcher. (Check out his Web site at Kubinek.com. I am so not kidding about that last one.)

Friday, October 22, 7:30 p.m.

If you're familiar with our calendars of events at RCReader.com, you know that event listings are separated into a number of different categories, among them "Music," "Lectures," "Visual Arts," "Movies," and "Kids' Stuff." Bill Birdsong Miller might be the only visiting artist I've run across whose credits make him a good fit for all of them.

Microbes: Invisible Invaders, Amazing Allies

Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre

Saturday, October 2, through Sunday, January 30

According to the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre's Web site, the venue's new exhibit offers an exploration of that "which sustains all life on earth while holding the deadly potential to wipe out millions." Much like my What's Happenin' jokes.

The Emmitt-Nershi BandMusic

The Emmitt-Nershi Band

Rock Island Brewing Company

Wednesday, September 22, 8 p.m.

It was in the fall of 2007 that musicians Drew Emmitt and Bill Nershi originally teamed up to form the much-admired touring outfit The Emmitt-Nershi Band. Considering that the gentlemen are, respectively, also members of the popular jam bands Leftover Salmon and The String Cheese Incident, trust me, the group's name could've easily been a far less appetizing hybrid.

Craig Karges: Experience the Extraordinary

Centennial Hall, Augustana College

Saturday, September 11, 8 p.m.

The gentleman in the accompanying photo is self-described "extraordinist" Craig Karges. Based on that picture, you may want to think twice about inviting him to your next dinner party.

The River Is LifeMovie

The River Is Life

Veterans Memorial Park

Saturday, August 28, 8 p.m.

In describing his documentary adventure The River Is Life - in which two intrepid buddies kayak 2,300 miles down the Mississippi River - filmmaker Phillip Hullquist says that the movie follows him and fellow traveler Ryan Jeanes "from black bears in the north to gators in the south." He also says that his films "tend to be about things people would love to do, but are letting some reason, real or imaginary, hold them back."

For my part, black bears and gators are exactly the reasons I'd never kayak down the Mississippi, but Hullquist is clearly made of stronger stuff than I.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Harrison Hilltop Theatre

Thursday, August 12, through Saturday, August 28

Timber Lake Playhouse

Thursday, August 12, through Sunday, August 22

Yup, you read that correctly: Davenport's Harrison Hilltop Theatre and Mt. Carroll's Timber Lake Playhouse will both open productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on August 12. And this is one of those times when stepping down from my theatre-reviewer tenure seems like the stupidest decision on Earth, because I can't think of many other musicals I'd be quite so excited to see in two separate venues over the same weekend.
