Beloit will host Quad Cities Monday night to decide Midwest League Western Division Championship

BELOIT, Wis. (SEPT. 8, 2013) - Beloit Snappers second baseman Christopher Bostick hit a two-run home run in the first inning to put his team ahead to stay and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 4-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in Game 2 of the Midwest League Western Division final at Pohlman Field Sunday night.

Beloit tied the best-of-three series at one game apiece and forced Game 3 at its home ballpark at 6:30 p.m. Monday, when the winner will advance to the Midwest League Championship. River Bandits right-hander Daniel Minor (8-3) is scheduled to face Snappers right-hander Derek DeYoung (8-5). Sunday's loss ended a string of 10 straight postseason victories for Quad Cities.

The Snappers jumped to a lead against right-hander Zach Morton (0-1) in the first inning, as left fielder Aaron Shipman hit a leadoff single, and Bostick hit the first pitch he saw with one out over the left-field fence for his second postseason home run and a 2-0 Snappers lead. Later in the inning, Morton allowed consecutive two-out singles by third baseman Renato Nunez, right fielder John Wooten and center fielder Brett Vertigan, whose hit scored Nunez but ended with Wooten being thrown out between third and second bases.

Trailing 3-0, the River Bandits came back against right-hander Kyle Finnegan in the second inning. Third baseman Rio Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and reached third base on two groundouts. First baseman Jobduan Morales walked ahead of designated hitter Brian Blasik, who beat out a ground ball to the right side for an infield RBI single. Second baseman Tony Kemp lined a single to right field that scored Morales, but center fielder Teoscar Hernandez grounded out to end the inning with a 3-2 deficit.

Bostick helped the Snappers respond in the second inning, when Morton allowed two walks before Bostick lined a two-out RBI single to left field for a 4-2 Snappers advantage. Morton went 1 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Right-hander Jamaine Cotton struck out first baseman Matt Olson on the way to starting 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief.

Finnegan left after walking the first two batters in the third. Right-hander Deyvi Jimenez entered and got a flyout and double play, but he allowed a leadoff bunt single by right fielder Jordan Scott in the fourth, when Kemp drew a walk, and Hernandez reached on an RBI infield single. Shortstop Carlos Correa walked to load the bases and force Jimenez out of the game. Left-hander Chris Lamb faced left fielder Danry Vasquez but threw a pitch in the dirt, and Kemp was tagged out trying to score on the final play of the inning, keeping the home team's lead at 4-3. It was the final time Quad Cities had the tying run at third base, as the visitors left 10 runners on base.

Quad Cities got two scoreless innings from left-hander J.D. Osborne and one shutout frame from right-hander Patrick Christensen to finish a 6 1/3-inning scoreless effort by the bullpen. Beloit used Lamb for 1 1/3 innings, then Kris Hall for a scoreless sixth inning, and right-hander Nolan Sanburn for two scoreless innings, although he worked out of a first-and-second, no-out jam in the eighth by getting a forceout on a bunt attempt and inducing a ground-ball double play. Right-hander Austin House allowed Hernandez to reach on a Nunez error in the ninth inning, but Vasquez struck out swinging with the tying run at second base to end the game.

Quad Cities can advance to Midwest League Championship with win Sunday or Monday in Beloit

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 7, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits' dominant postseason pitching continued for a third straight game, as left-hander Josh Hader allowed one run on three hits in a career-high seven innings Saturday night, and the bullpen finished a 3-1 win over the Beloit Snappers in Game 1 of the Midwest League Western Division final in front of 1,760 at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series and can advance to the Midwest League Championship with a victory Sunday or Monday in Beloit, where Quad Cities went 5-2 as the visiting team this season. Dating back to the 2011 playoffs, the River Bandits have won 10 straight postseason games. Quad Cities has won 16 of 19 games overall and allowed only four hits for a third straight game.

Hader (1-0), who had starts of 6 1/3 and 6 2/3 innings with Delmarva in the South Atlantic League and twice worked six innings in the regular season for Quad Cities, faced one batter over the minimum Saturday. He allowed a first-inning leadoff single by left fielder Aaron Shipman, who was thrown out trying to steal second base. After a walk to designated hitter Ryan Mathews, Hader induced one of his team's two double plays. Hader had set down eight straight batters before Mathews hit a home run to left field with one out in the fourth inning. Hader then faced the minimum the rest of his outing, allowing only a fifth-inning leadoff single by right fielder John Wooten, who was retired as part of a double play. After allowing two earned runs on two hits and six walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings against Beloit last Sunday, Hader walked one and struck out one batter Saturday.

The River Bandits beat their opponent to the scoreboard for the first time in the playoffs. In the first inning, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a one-hopper to shortstop Sam Roberts, who bobbled the ball and threw it into the first-base dugout to allow Hernandez to reach second base. Shortstop Carlos Correa dropped a single in front of left fielder Aaron Shipman to score Hernandez for a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning against right-hander Andres Avila (0-1), designated hitter Brian Blasik hit a leadoff single to left-center field, and second baseman Tony Kemp singled to right field. With one out, Correa drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Blasik and make it 2-0. Avila left after 4 2/3 innings, having allowed six hits and two runs - one earned. Right-hander Vincent Voiro walked third baseman Rio Ruiz with one out in the sixth inning, and right fielder Jordan Scott drove an RBI double to left-center field for a 3-1 lead.

After Hader, left-hander Mitchell Lambson pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout. For a third straight playoff game, right-hander Andrew Walter pitched the final inning. He allowed a two-out single by Shipman but earned his second postseason save by striking out Mathews to end the game with Shipman at first base - the only runner Beloit left on base. The two-hour, 10-minute game was shorter than any nine-inning regular season game for Quad Cities this season.

Saturday's River Bandits victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount Sunday, Sept. 8. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Sunday, Sept. 8. Quad Cities will travel to Beloit for Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. River Bandits right-hander Zach Morton (0-1) is scheduled to face Snappers right-hander Kyle Finnegan (1-1).

Quad Cities advances to Western Division final and will host Beloit for Game 1 on Saturday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (SEPT. 5, 2013) - For a second straight night, the Quad Cities River Bandits held the potent Cedar Rapids Kernels offense in check on Thursday night, and third baseman Rio Ruiz hit a go-ahead home run in a three-run fourth inning leading to a 4-2 win and two-game sweep of the Midwest League Western Division semifinal at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Quad Cities won its ninth straight postseason game, dating back to the 2011 Midwest League Championship run, and ended the season for the Kernels, who had a league-high 88 regular-season wins. The River Bandits will host the Beloit Snappers for Game 1 of the Midwest League Western Division Final on Saturday. Beloit swept its division semifinal against the Clinton LumberKings Thursday. Saturday's game time will be announced on Friday, and second-round tickets will be available beginning at noon Friday.

The Kernels took the first lead for a second straight game, as center fielder Jonathan Murphy led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to left field off left-hander Joe Bircher (1-0). But Bircher bounced back to retire six straight hitters and work around single baserunners in the third and fourth innings. In the fifth he allowed a two-out double by third baseman Joel Licon and Murphy to reach on an error by shortstop Carlos Correa, but Bircher fanned shortstop Niko Goodrum to strike out the side. He completed five innings and gave up one earned run on three hits while striking out four batters.

The River Bandits tied the game against right-hander Tim Shibuya (0-1) in the second inning, as third baseman Rio Ruiz worked a two-out walk, and catcher Roberto Pena drove him in with a double down the left-field line. In a 1-1 tie, the visitors loaded the bases in the third inning, but Shibuya got a strikeout and groundout to escape the jam.

Ruiz broke the tie by launching the first pitch of the fourth inning to the base of the scoreboard in right-center field for the first River Bandits playoff home run since Game 3 of the 2011 Championship. Pena then reached on an infield single, and right fielder Jordan Scott placed a bunt single to first base. A sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position, and with two outs, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez grounded a two-run single through the left side of the infield for a 4-1 lead.

The Kernels managed to rally in the sixth inning against left-hander J.D. Osborne, as second baseman Jorge Polanco hit a leadoff double and right fielder Adam Brett Walker drew a walk. Polanco scored on a groundout, but right-hander Patrick Christensen came in to strike out designated hitter Travis Harrison. Christensen worked perfect seventh and eighth innings to retire all seven batters in 2 1/3 innings. For a second straight night, right-hander Andrew Walter pitched a perfect ninth inning, completing a game-ending string of 11 consecutive batters retired by the bullpen, which allowed only one run on two hits in the series. After leading the league in runs scored in the regular season, the Kernels had three combined runs on eight total hits in two postseason games.

Thursday's River Bandits victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount Friday, Sept. 6. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Friday, Sept. 6.

Quad Cities can advance to Western Division final with win Thursday or Friday in Cedar Rapids

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 4, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Chris Devenski, left-hander Mitchell Lambson and right-hander Andrew Walter combined to hold the Midwest League's highest scoring offense to one run, and shortstop Carlos Correa had a game-high three hits in a 2-1, playoff-opening win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 2,417 at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Midwest League Western Division semifinal series and can advance to the Western Division final with a victory Thursday or Friday in Cedar Rapids, where Quad Cities went 5-2 as the visiting team this season. Dating back to the 2011 playoffs, the River Bandits have won eight straight postseason games.

Devenski worked around a two-out single in the first inning, but he allowed the Kernels to take the lead in the second. Kernels right fielder Adam Brett Walker reached on an infield single, and first baseman Mike Gonzales drove a double into the left-center-field gap to bring home Walker. An error and walk loaded the bases with two outs before Devenski got a foul popup to end the inning.

Kernels left-hander Brett Lee allowed just two hits until Correa reached on an infield single with one out in the fourth. With one out and left fielder Danry Vasquez batting, Correa ran on a 3-2 pitch that Vasquez took for ball four, but Quesada still threw into center field, allowing Correa to reach third. With two outs, third baseman Ruiz grounded a game-tying single past a diving Gonzales at first base.

Devenski set down 10 of 12 batters to close his five-inning start. He allowed three hits, one earned run and three walks and one strikeout. Lambson started the sixth inning and retired the first seven batters he faced before allowing shortstop Jorge Polanco's eighth-inning, one-out single - the first Kernels hit since the second inning. After Lambson notched his fifth strikeout to complete 2 2/3 innings, Walter (1-0) came in to face Walker, whom he retired on a foul popup with a runner at first base. The Kernels left seven runners on base.

In the bottom of the eighth, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a leadoff single - the River Bandits' first since the fourth inning - against right-hander Madison Boer (0-1), and Correa lined a single to right field on a hit-and-run play that ended with Hernandez at third base. Vasquez then grounded to Goodrum, who started a double play, which allowed Hernandez to score the go-ahead run.

Walter struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, completing his team's four-hit, nine-strikeout pitching performance.

Wednesday's victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount Thursday, Sept. 5. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Executive Director of Modern Woodmen Park has been with Midwest League club for six years

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 3, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits announced on Tuesday that Executive Director of Modern Woodmen Park Stefanie Brown is concluding her work with the Class-A Midwest League club after playing an integral role in the front office the last six years.

Following her 10th season in Minor League Baseball - including each of the first six years of the new River Bandits under the ownership of Main Street Baseball - Brown will conclude her work in the team's front office at the end of October.

"After six seasons with the River Bandits, I know it is time to start the next chaper in my professional career," Brown said. "I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to be with this wonderful organization, which has a great community that supports it. Throughout the years here, I have met a number of great people whom I will miss seeing at the ballpark. But I know I am ready to see the next challenge in store for me."

Brown has been an integral part of the River Bandits' day-to-day operation since joining the organization in December 2007 as director of community and client relations. She was promoted to assistant general manager after one season. In that role, she oversaw Modern Woodmen Park's suite level, special events, promotions, merchandise and the team's hosting of the 2011 Midwest League All-Star Game. She has three times been honored as the Midwest League's Female Executive of the Year.

Following the 2011 season, Brown became the Midwest League's youngest general manager and only female general manager. In her first year as general manager, the Quad Cities club welcomed 240,008 fans in attendance - its highest total since 1995. The total attendance of more than 1.3 million the last six seasons is the best such stretch in Quad Cities franchise history. In Brown's season as Executive Director of Modern Woodmen Park, the River Bandits' home was voted the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in a nation-wide vote this summer by fans and readers of 10Best.com and USA TODAY.

"Stefanie Brown is one of my most favorite people, and she has been an incredibly valuable part of the River Bandits and the Quad Cities community since Main Street Baseball bought the team six years ago," said team co-owner Dave Heller. "She is the single best hire I have ever made. Her tremendous positive impact on this organization will become an enduring legacy, and we know her immense talent and remarkable character will carry her to great success in whatever she chooses to do. She will be greatly missed."

UP NEXT:The River Bandits will give away a used car and a used pick-up truck at the playoff game Wednesday night. 12-ounce beer and soda, as well as hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and nachos will be $1 each, and all regular individual tickets are just $5 each. Quad Cities finishes 81-57 overall and will open the playoffs with first-place Cedar Rapids Wednesday

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 2, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Daniel Minor pitched a season-high six strong innings, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit his team-high 13th home run, and right fielder Jordan Scott had the go-ahead RBI as part of his two-triple game to lead a 3-2 win over the Beloit Snappers in Monday's regular season finale in front of 3,911 at Modern Woodmen Park.

Playoff-bound Quad Cities (43-26 second half, 81-57 overall) won 13 of its final 16 games and took the final five series in order to tie for the third-most single-season victories in the 54-season franchise history. Monday's win earned a season-series split with Beloit (34-35, 77-62), assuring the River Bandits a .500 or better regular-season record against every Midwest League Western Division opponent. Quad Cities will host Cedar Rapids for Game 1 of the Western Division semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits right-hander Chris Devenski (4-3) is scheduled to face Kernels left-hander Brett Lee (8-4) in Game 1.

Minor (8-3) allowed Beloit to take a lead in the top of the second inning, as designated hitter John Wooten hit a one-out double down the left-field line and scored when second baseman Roberto Pena dropped a two-out popup in shallow center field. After a third-inning single by right fielder Aaron Shipman, Minor retired eight straight hitters, including striking out the side in the fifth.

Hernandez led off the third inning by hitting the first pitch from right-hander Deyvi Jimenez (2-6) over the left-center-field fence to tie the game. Hernandez scored his league-leading 97th run, which ties him for fourth-most in a single season by a Quad Cities player since the Midwest League franchise began in 1960. Hernandez's total is the most since Jon Schaeffer scored as many in 1999.

In the fourth inning, Pena drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and reached third base on a flyout. Scott then drove a fly ball over center fielder Brett Vertigan and reached third base, while Pena scored the go-ahead run. Hernandez later drew a two-out walk, and shortstop Carlos Correa grounded a single into center field for his team-high 144th hit and 86th RBI. Those single-season totals place Correa in ties for ninth and eighth, respectively, in franchise history. Correa's .320 batting average finished third in the Midwest League and is tied for sixth-best in franchise history. His .407 on-base percentage was also second-highest in the league, and he led the circuit with an .875 on-base-plus-slugging (OPS) percentage.

With a 3-1 lead, Minor allowed three sixth-inning hits, including an RBI single by Snappers first baseman Matt Olson. On the same play, Scott and Correa relayed to third baseman Rio Ruiz to retire a runner at third. Minor got a popout to keep the 3-2 lead. He allowed six hits and two runs - one earned - while striking out five batters. Right-hander Jamaine Cotton started the seventh and worked around a leadoff single in the eighth for two scoreless innings. Right-hander Zach Morton pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first career save.

Quad Cities holds on for victory over heavy-hitting Beloit to even final regular season series

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 1, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits left fielder Danry Vasquez had his first career two-homer game and helped his team build an 8-2 lead which proved to be just enough in an 8-7 win over the Beloit Snappers in front of 3,522 at Modern Woodmen Park Sunday night.

Quad Cities (42-26 second half, 80-56 overall) has won 12 of 15 games and took a home game against Beloit (34-34, 77-61) for the first time since Aug. 19, 2012. The Snappers had won seven straight games in Davenport and took the game's first lead in the third inning against left-hander Josh Hader. Catcher Nick Rickles drew a one-out walk, and scored on a double by left fielder Ryan Mathews.

The River Bandits answered against right-hander Kyle Finnegan (1-1) with their largest inning since a season-high eight-run frame May 13 against Peoria. Second baseman Austin Elkins singled, and right fielder Jordan Scott drew a walk. After designated hitter Tony Kemp struck out, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a ground ball stopped by diving third baseman Renato Nunez, whose throw past first base allowed Elkins to score the tying run. Shortstop Carlos Correa then hit a two-run single up the middle, and Vasquez followed by driving his first home run since his River Bandits debut July 31 off the top of the right-center field fence. Third baseman Rio Ruiz hit his second double of the game down the first-base line and later scored when catcher Roberto Pena put down a bunt to make it 6-1.

With a 6-1 lead, Hader worked around a fourth-inning double but walked four of the first six batters in the fifth inning to force home a run and leave after 4 2/3 innings, having allowed two hits, a career-high six walks and four strikeouts. Right-hander Patrick Christensen came in to retire Nunez on a flyout to center field, stranding the bases loaded with a 6-2 lead. Christensen allowed three singles to load the bases in the sixth inning but struck out the final two batters to work 1 1/3 shutout innings.

After Vasquez homered leading off the fifth, and first baseman Bobby Borchering drove in a run with his first triple since Aug. 16, 2012, the River Bandits held an 8-2 lead. In the seventh inning, however, right-hander Jorge Perez allowed a hit batter and walk before Snappers first baseman Matt Olson and right fielder John Wooten each hit RBI singles, and designated hitter Ryan Delgado hit a three-run home run to field to close within 8-7. Two more hits chased Perez, and right-hander Andrew Walter came in to strand two runners ending the seventh. Walter faced the minimum in the eighth and ninth, with the help of a double play, and earned his third save.

The River Bandits' scoring of at least seven runs activates the "Lucky Seven Run" promotion, as American TV & Appliance at 4800 Elmore Avenue in Davenport will offer a 40% discount on select furniture Monday, Sept. 2. Sunday's victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount Monday, Sept. 2. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Monday, Sept. 2.Quad Cities plays the regular season finale against Beloit at 1 p.m. Monday at Modern Woodmen Park. Carlos Correa hits ninth home run of the season in opener between playoff-bound clubs

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 31, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits shortstop Carlos Correa gave his team a 4-2 lead with a fifth-inning home run Saturday night, but the Beloit Snappers pitchers set down the next 13 batters, and Snappers right fielder John Wooten and first baseman Matt Olson each homered in a 5-4 comeback victory in front of 5,126 at Modern Woodmen Park.

In the first game of the final regular season series for two playoff-bound clubs, Quad Cities (41-26 second half, 79-57 overall) had its four-game winning streak snapped and lost its last seventh straight game against Beloit (34-33, 77-60) at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits last defeated Beloit in Davenport on Aug. 19, 2012.

Quad Cities took the lead in the first inning, as second baseman Tony Kemp singled to right field, and center fielder Teoscar Hernandez doubled to left. Two batters later, left fielder Danry Vasquez grounded out to bring in Kemp for a 1-0 lead.

In his first start since July 4, River Bandits right-hander Juan Minaya did not allow a hit until a third-inning, two-out single by left fielder Aaron Shipman. In the fourth inning, Snappers shortstop Daniel Robertson hit an infield single before Minaya picked up his fourth and fifth strikeouts. Wooten then hit a 1-2 pitch to the Built Ford Tough Deck in right field for his 20th home run and a 2-1 Beloit lead. Minaya retired the next four batters to complete five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fifth, catcher Jobduan Morales and right fielder Jordan Scott drew consecutive walks against right-hander Dylan Covey (1-1), who threw a wild pitch to advance both runners into scoring position. After Covey fanned Kemp and Hernandez, Correa ripped a soaring liner to the Modern Woodmen Berm in left field for a three-run home run - his first since Aug. 9. Covey struck out Vasquez to finish five innings with five hits allowed, four earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

With a 4-2 lead, right-hander Richard Rodriguez (0-1) started the top of the sixth inning by allowing a double to designated hitter Ryan Mathews and single to shortstop Daniel Robertson. With one out, Olson drilled a ball over the right field fence for his team-high 23rd home run and a 5-4 Snappers lead. Rodriguez came back to retire 11 of the next 13 batters to finish a season-high four innings, while yielding four hits, three earned runs and one walk with three strikeouts.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 31, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits introduced two new members of their front office leadership team Saturday, as team co-owner Dave Heller introduced new Assistant General Manager of Special Events Bridget Otten and new Finance Manager Dustin Miller at an afternoon press conference.

"The River Bandits make outstanding customer service our top priority, and Bridget Otten and Dustin Miller are exactly the type of people who bring that to the Quad Cities community," said team co-owner Dave Heller. "We are excited to have them as part of an outstanding front office leadership team."

Otten, a native of Rock Island, Ill., brings 10 years of experience in event management, weddings, fundraising and sales. Most recently, she has been the Catering Manager at the Radisson Quad City Plaza in Davenport the past three years. As the Assistant General Manager of Special Events, Otten will oversee all special events at Modern Woodmen Park, working with clients, vendors and community partners on the weddings, parties, reunions, business meetings, seminars and many other events year-round at the ballpark.

"I am extremely grateful to Dave Heller, Stefanie Brown and the entire River Bandits organization for allowing me the opportunity to join what promises to be such a great team!" Otten said. "I look forward to showcasing the phenomenal attributes of special events at what has proven to be the Best Minor League Ballpark in America."

Miller, a native of Elkhart, Ind., and graduate of St. Ambrose University, has worked 16 years in finance and accounting, most recently with Martin Engineering in Neponset, Ill. As the Finance Manager, Miller will manage all financial aspects of the River Bandits and Main Street Baseball.

"I am extremely excited for the opportunity to work for a professional sports organization like the Quad Cities River Bandits, who are an important part of the Quad Cities community and provide fans with a fun and affordable entertainment option," Miller said. "I am looking forward to joining the team and being part of the continued success and growth of the franchise."
