The club's Assistant General Manager for two seasons has 10 years of baseball front office experience

DAVENPORT, Iowa (OCT. 24, 2013) - The Quad Cities River Bandits are promoting a key front office member to lead the Midwest League club, as the team announced that two-year Assistant General Manager Andrew Chesser is the Midwest League club's new General Manager at a press conference with River Bandits co-owner Dave Heller Thursday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

The River Bandits have continuity with Chesser, who has 10 years of experience in Minor League Baseball and has been the River Bandits' assistant general manager the past two seasons. Among the highlights the past two seasons were the club's highest single-season attendance since 1995, the franchise's sixth Midwest League Championship, a Golden Bobblehead Award for the Best Charity Promotion or Event in Minor League Baseball, and the selection of the team's home, Modern Woodmen Park as the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in a nationwide vote by readers of 10Best.com and USA TODAY.

"Andrew Chesser is the ideal person to continue the unprecedented growth of the River Bandits," Heller said. "He is incredibly smart, diligent, thorough and hard-working, and, most importantly, he is completely committed to providing outstanding customer service to the best fans in the country. With a new Ferris wheel, a carousel, zip line, and some fun new rides coming, the River Bandits have a chance to make this our best season ever. Under Andrew's leadership, I am confident we will get there."

Chesser joined the River Bandits in the winter of 2012 after eight seasons of diverse baseball experience with the Lynchburg (Va.) Hillcats, the advanced Class-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in the Carolina League. Chesser began as a stadium operations intern with the Hillcats in 2004 and became the full-time stadium operations director the next season. He later became the director of information technology and creative services, and he was the director of group sales and creative services his last five seasons in Lynchburg.

Chesser is a native of New Milford, Conn., and graduate of Lynchburg (Va.) College with a major in history and minors in French and sports management. He and his wife, Susan, live in Davenport.

"I am extremely excited about taking on the role of General Manager of the River Bandits," Chesser said. "This organization has already established that it has the best team in the league, the best ballpark in America, and what I believe is the best community in the country."

Tony Kemp has three hits, and Rio Ruiz hits third postseason homer in 4-2 clincher over South Bend

DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 14, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits left-hander Josh Hader struck out eight South Bend Silver Hawks in seven shutout innings, and his teammates built an early 4-0 lead that held for a 4-2 win and three-game sweep of the 2013 Midwest League Championship Series in front of 3,607 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

In the first year of a new affiliation with the Houston Astros, the River Bandits won the sixth title in Quad Cities franchise history and second in three seasons. Including the playoffs, Quad Cities won its final eight series, 18 of its final 21 games and 20 of its last 24.

One week after pitching a career-high seven innings and yielding just one run in his playoff debut, Hader (2-0) went the same distance but allowed only one baserunner past first. He erased a second-inning single with a double play, stranded singles in the fourth and sixth innings, and left his only walk on base in the seventh. The eight strikeouts were his most as a pitcher in the Houston Astros system.

For a third straight game against South Bend, the River Bandits scored first. Second baseman Tony Kemp, who had a game-high three hits and league-best 12 in eight postseason games, led off with a single to left field. Center fielder Teoscar Hernandez put down a sacrifice bunt, but right-hander Aaron Blair (2-1) threw past first base, allowing Kemp to score and Hernandez to reach third base. Left fielder Danry Vasquez singled down the first-base line to knock in Hernandez to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, third baseman Rio Ruiz hit Blair's first pitch out to left field for his third postseason home run - one in each series-clinching game against Cedar Rapids, Beloit and South Bend. Right fielder Jordan Scott added a single to right field, and Kemp drove him in with a double to left-center field, extending the lead to 4-0. Blair then set down eight straight, including five on strikeouts, until Kemp hit a one-out single in the fifth. Blair lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing all four runs - three earned - on six hits with seven strikeouts.

After Hader struck out at least one batter in each of his seven innings except the sixth, left-hander Mitchell Lambson started the eighth inning and struck out the first two batters he faced. Lambson issued a walk before a fielder's choice groundout ended the inning. The Silver Hawks bullpen allowed three walks but pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings.

In the ninth inning, right-hander Andrew Walter allowed a one-out single by third baseman Brandon Drury, and first baseman Rudy Flores hit a two-run home run down the right-field line - the first runs against Walter in the Midwest League and the first Silver Hawks runs in 23 innings. After second baseman Fidel Pena drew a walk, Walter got designated hitter Roidany Aguila to pop out to catcher Roberto Pena, and right fielder Mike Lang flied to center fielder Teoscar Hernandez for the final out of the Midwest League season.

Saturday's victory means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Sunday, Sept. 15. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits' victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Quad Cities pitches first playoff shutout to take 2-0 lead in Midwest League Championship Series

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (SEPT. 12, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits left-hander Joe Bircher, right-hander Jamaine Cotton, and left-hander J.D. Osborne combined for the team's first shutout of the postseason in a 5-0 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Four Winds Field at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in Game 2 of the Midwest League Championship Series Thursday night.

Quad Cities took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five matchup and will play any and all remaining games at home at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits' first chance to win their second title in three seasons is Game 3 at 7 p.m. Saturday. Left-hander Josh Hader (2-0 regular season, 1-0 postseason) is scheduled to face Silver Hawks right-hander Aaron Blair (0-2 regular season, 2-0 postseason).

The River Bandits scored their first run with one out in the second inning, when first baseman and former Silver Hawk Bobby Borchering crushed a pitch from right-hander Blake Perry (0-1) off the scoreboard in right-center field for his first postseason home run. In the bottom of the second, Silver Hawks first baseman Rudy Flores and second baseman Fidel Pena hit consecutive singles off Bircher (1-0), and Flores went to third base on a flyout by catcher Roidany Aguila. Right fielder Mike Lang tried a squeeze bunt up the first-base line, but Borchering threw to catcher Roberto Pena, who hung on to the ball for the tag despite being knocked on his back side by Flores.

Perry struggled with command in the fourth inning, as he issued a one-out walk to left fielder Danry Vasquez and in the course of an 11-pitch battle with Borchering, threw three wild pitches - the last coming on ball four to put Borchering at first and bring home Vasquez. Third baseman Rio Ruiz followed with a double to the right-center field gap that scored Borchering and chased Perry. After Ruiz stole third base and Pena walked against right-hander Jesse Darrah, right fielder Jordan Scott pushed a bunt toward first that scored Ruiz.

With a 4-0 lead, Bricher allowed two walks and a hit in the fourth inning to load the bases. Designated hitter Michael Perez then hit a fly ball to shallow right-center field, and Scott made the catch before firing toward home plate, where Pena tagged out Flores for the second time in three innings to complete the inning-ending double play. In the fifth, Bircher allowed consecutive one-out singles before getting a flyout and strikeout to finish five innings, having allowed six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

In the top of the sixth, Ruiz hit a two-out double, and Pena delivered the game's only hit with a runner in scoring position - an RBI single that scored Ruiz for a 5-0 lead. Right-hander Jamaine Cotton started the bottom of the sixth and retired all nine batters he faced, including six straight strikeouts in the seventh and eighth, to work three perfect innings. Left-hander J.D. Osborne started the bottom of the ninth and hit Lang with a pitch with two outs - ending a string of 13 consecutive batters retired by Quad Cities pitchers. He got Perez to ground out to first base, ending Quad Cities first playoff shutout since Sept. 10, 2011, in Game 1 of the divisional final against Kane County.

Thursday's victory means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Saturday, Sept. 14. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits' victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Saturday, Sept. 14.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits will give away nine DVD players - one for each inning - and nine baseball-themed movies courtesy of American TV & Appliance in Davenport at the first Championship Series home game at 7 p.m. Saturday. Fireworks will follow the game, and 12-ounce beer and soda, as well as hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and nachos are $1 each. Quad Cities opens Championship Series with yet another playoff pitchers' duel win over South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (SEPT. 11, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Chris Devenski struck out a season-high nine batters in seven innings, right fielder Jordan Scott hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning, and third baseman Rio Ruiz hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks in the opener of the Midwest League Championship Series at Four Winds Field at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium Wednesday night.

Opening its second Midwest League Championship Series in three seasons, Quad Cities took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five matchup. Game 2 will be at 6:05 p.m. Thursday in South Bend, with River Bandits left-hander Joe Bircher (3-3 regular season, 1-0 postseason) scheduled to face Silver Hawks right-hander Blake Perry (8-7, 0-0). Game 3 will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities took a lead in the third inning against South Bend right-hander Braden Shipley. Designated hitter Brian Blasik drew a one-out walk, and second baseman Tony Kemp reached on an infield single toward third. Both advanced when center fielder Teoscar Hernandez flied out to center field. Shortstop Carlos Correa and left fielder Danry Vasquez each walked to force home the first run.

Devenski (1-0) kept the 1-0 lead despite lone doubles in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Silver Hawks first baseman Rudy Flores hit a one-out double, and second baseman Fidel Pena cracked a two-run home run to right-center field, giving his team its first lead of the game at 2-1. Devenski then retired 11 of 13 batters, including six on strikeouts, to finish his outing.

Shipley held the lead until Scott led off the seventh with his first home run since June 24, 2012, with the Lexington Legends. In a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh, Devenski allowed a one-out single by Silver Hawks designated hitter Justin Williams but stranded him at third by striking out left fielder Chuck Taylor. South Bend went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left six on base.

In the eighth inning, Correa hit a leadoff single to chase right-hander Kyle Winkler (0-1). Vasquez then grounded into a fielder's choice against left-hander Daniel Gibson, who threw a wild pick-off attempt to first base that moved Vasquez to third with one out. Gibson struck out first baseman Bobby Borchering, but Ruiz fought to a 2-2 count before grounding his first hit of the game through the right side to score Vasquez with two outs for a 3-2 lead. It was Quad Cities' only hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Right-hander Patrick Christensen inherited the lead and got two of the first three hitters in the eighth. With center fielder Socrates Brito at first base from his one-out single, right-hander Andrew Walter struck out Flores to end the inning. In the ninth, Pena hit a leadoff single against Walter and went to second base on a sacrifice. Walter then got a strikeout and flyout to left field to earn his third postseason save.

ABOUT THE BANDITS: The River Bandits ownership is making one of the biggest improvements to Modern Woodmen Park since the ballpark was first built back in 1931! A new Ferris wheel, standing 112 feet over the playing field, is planned for next spring, along with a carousel and other new games and attractions. This season, the team just unveiled a new 300-foot long dual zip line, a rock climbing wall, and a number of new bounce houses. The team's major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, just saw all six of its affiliates reach the playoffs - the first time in a decade any MLB team can claim such success. The Championship Series will likely be the last chance for Quad Cities fans to see 2012 No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa and many other future stars in a River Bandits uniform.

Quad Cities will open Midwest League Championship Wednesday in South Bend

BELOIT, Wis. (SEPT. 9, 2013) - With their season hanging in the balance in the decisive Game 3 of the Midwest League Western Division final, the Quad Cities River Bandits matched a season high with 17 hits and pounded the Beloit Snappers for a 9-5 win at Pohlman Field Monday night that sent the visitors to their second Midwest League Championship Series in three seasons.

The River Bandits won the best-of-three series, two games to one, and advanced to a best-of-five championship with the South Bend Silver Hawks, who won 9-5 at home over the Fort Wayne TinCaps in Game 3 of the Eastern Division final Monday night. Quad Cities will play Games 1 and 2 at Four Winds Field in South Bend Wednesday and Thursday. Game 3 will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park, and tickets will be available at the River Bandits box office, by phone at 563-324-3000 and at www.riverbandits.com beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. If necessary, Games 4 and 5 would also be at Modern Woodmen Park on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Quad Cities took a lead in the second inning against Snappers right-hander Derek DeYoung (0-1). First baseman Bobby Borchering broke an 0-for-12 postseason start with a single to left-center field. Third baseman Rio Ruiz lifted a two-run home run - his second of the playoffs - just to the left of the batter's eye in center field for a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, center fielder Teoscar Hernandez led off with his first postseason home run, and shortstop Carlos Correa followed with his first of the playoffs to cap the first pair of back-to-back home runs by the River Bandits this season. After left fielder Danry Vasquez drew a walk, DeYoung was removed for right-hander Trevor Bayless, who allowed another run to score after walking Ruiz, who made a delayed break for second with two outs, allowing Vasquez to score on a double steal when the throw went past second base.

With a 5-0 lead, right-hander Daniel Minor (1-0), who struck out four batters in the first two innings, allowed a leadoff, third-inning home run by Snappers shortstop Sam Roberts. Minor then retired six straight batters before center fielder Brett Vertigan and catcher Nick Rickles hit consecutive doubles to start the fifth inning. In his first postseason outing, Minor allowed six hits, no walks and two earned runs, and he matched season highs with six strikeouts in six innings.

Seven River Bandits had multi-hit games to amass 17 hits - matching their regular season high set April 6 at Kane County. Quad Cities built its lead by scoring in five straight innings. Already with a 5-1 lead in the fourth, designated hitter Brian Blasik doubled and scored on Correa's RBI groundout. In the fifth, Borchering had his third hit with a leadoff double against Bayless, and right fielder Jordan Scott hit an RBI double for a 7-1 lead. Borchering and Scott had team highs with three hits apiece. Scott finished a home run shy of the cycle.

In the sixth, Hernandez hit a one-out single, and Correa drove an RBI triple down the right-field line. Vasquez then hit an RBI single for a 9-2 advantage. Right-hander Juan Minaya inherited that lead to start the seventh but allowed the first four batters of the eighth to reach safely, and the Snappers closed within 9-5. Left-hander Mitchell Lambson worked around two hits in the final two scoreless innings.

Monday's victory means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Tuesday, Sept. 10. DAVENPORT, Iowa (SEPT. 9, 2013) - Third baseman Rio Ruiz is the Quad Cities River Bandits Player of the Month for August, and left-handed pitcher Brian Holmes is the team's Pitcher of the Month, the Houston Astros announced on Monday.

The Houston Astros Player Development Department named a Pitcher and Player of the Month at each of their eight minor league affiliates. These awards are chosen every month by the field staff of each team. In four August starts, the Lawrenceville, Ga., native pitched at least 5 1/3 innings while allowing no more than one run in each outing. The 22-year-old had a 2-0 record, 21 strikeouts and just three runs allowed - two earned - in 23 1/3 innings for a 0.77 ERA - best among Quad Cities pitchers with at least 20 innings. Holmes finished the season 5-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 15 appearances, including 10 starts.
