Three-run 10th inning for Peoria sends Quad Cities to second straight loss

DAVENPORT, Iowa (APRIL 12, 2013) - Hosting the affiliate of their former parent club and welcoming several alumni back to Modern Woodmen Park, the Quad Cities River Bandits battled the Peoria Chiefs into the 10th inning Friday night before an infield single by Chiefs second baseman Breyvic Valera and a two-run error by River Bandits third baseman Rio Ruiz led to a 4-1 victory for the visitors in front of a home-opening crowd of 1,377 fans.

The Chiefs (4-3), the affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, opened the 10th inning against right-hander John Neely (0-1) with a single by shortstop Alex Mejia and a walk by Chiefs right fielder and former River Bandit Nick Martini. Chiefs center fielder Charlie Tilson sacrificed both runners before Neely intentionally walked Chiefs catcher and former River Bandit Casey Rasmus. With the bases loaded, Neely struck out Chiefs left fielder and former River Bandit Michael Swinson. With two outs and the infield at normal depth, Valera hit a soft grounder to the left of the pitcher's mound, and shortstop Carlos Correa was unable to pick it up for a play, bringing in the go-ahead run. Chiefs third baseman Patrick Wisdom then chopped a grounder that got past third baseman Rio Ruiz, whose error allowed two more runs to score for a 4-1 Peoria lead.

The River Bandits (5-2), the affiliate of the Houston Astros, made the bottom of the 10th inning interesting against former River Bandit and Chiefs right-hander Dixon Llorens. Center fielder Teoscar Hernandez singled to cap a 3-for-5 night, and Correa drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Ruiz grounded out, advancing both runners. Then first baseman Jesse Wierzbicki struck out looking - the 14th strikeout for Quad Cities hitters Friday night. Designated hitter Terrell Joyce grounded out to Chiefs first baseman and former River Bandit Jordan Walton. Quad Cities finished the night 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Quad Cities broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, as second baseman Joe Sclafani reached second base on a throwing error by Valera. Two batters later, Correa drove a double to center field for a 1-0 lead. After that, right-hander Kurt Heyer did not allow another runner past second base. Heyer finished five innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run and two walks, while striking out eight batters.

Peoria tied the game in the next half-inning against right-hander Mike Hauschild. Wisdom drew a one-out walk, and Walton lined a double down the left-field line, advancing to third base on the throw home. With Mejia batting, Walton tried stealing home, and Hauschild threw to Peña for the final out of the inning. Hauschild finished five innings, allowed three hits, one run and one walk, and struck out three batters. Left-hander Colton Cain worked in and out of trouble in the sixth and seventh innings and finished three shutout innings with three hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

The Chiefs bullpen pitched five shutout innings, as right-handers Michael Aldrete and Joe Scanio (1-0) each worked two innings.

The River Bandits will try to even the series Saturday night at 7 p.m., when a tandem of right-hander Jordan Jankowski (0-0) and left-hander Brian Holmes (0-0) will face Chiefs left-hander and former River Bandit Dail Villanueva (0-1).

Catcher Jobduan Morales has two hits; Cameron Lamb earns win after getting save Saturday

GENEVA, Ill. (APRIL 7, 2013) - Held to one hit through nine innings and forced into extra innings for a second straight day, the Quad Cities River Bandits broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run 13th inning on the way to a 3-1 victory and four-game road sweep of the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

With one out in the top of the 13th, River Bandits center fielder Teoscar Hernandez drove a triple to the warning track in right-center field, giving Quad Cities (4-0) a runner at third base with less than two outs for the first time Sunday. Right-hander Eddie Orozco (0-1) then intentionally walked shortstop Carlos Correa. With designated hitter Chase Davidson at bat, the Cougars reliever threw a high pitch off the glove of catcher Willson Contreras to the backstop that allowed Hernandez to score the go-ahead run. Correa advanced to second on the pitch, reached third on Davidson's groundout, and scored when first baseman Jesse Wierzbicki singled to center field.

Right-hander Cameron Lamb (1-0) walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 13th, but he induced two flyouts to center field and a popup to shortstop to end the game. After saving Saturday's 11-inning win, Lamb entered with two outs and runners at first and second bases in the bottom of the 12th. He retired right fielder Bijan Rademacher on a flyout to left field, ending the Cougars' best extra-inning threat.

Cougars left-hander Michael Heesch retired the first 11 River Bandits batters and did not allow a hit until two outs in the fifth inning. River Bandits catcher Jobduan Morales broke up the no-hitter and shutout with a double down the right-field line that scored left fielder Terrell Joyce, who had drawn a one-out walk.

Kane County (0-4) did not score in the first five innings against left-hander Brian Holmes, who struck out one batter and allowed just two hits. Right-hander Jordan Jankowski started the sixth inning and gave up the tying run in the seventh. Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach and left fielder Rock Shoulders each singled, and catcher Willson Contreras hit a sacrifice fly to score Vogelbach.

Jankowski worked 3 2/3 innings before a two-out, ninth-inning walk to Shoulders that ended his outing. Right-hander John Neely entered and allowed an infield single to Contreras before retiring the next eight hitters. Neely pitched three innings in relief and struck out three batters. He gave way to Lamb after walking two batters in the 12th inning.

The first-place River Bandits will open a three-game series at Burlington Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Left-hander Joe Bircher (0-0) and right-hander Vincent Velasquez (1-0) are scheduled to face right-hander Cam Bedrosian for the Los Angeles Angels Class-A affiliate.

Already winners of their first series of the season, the River Bandits will attempt to sweep the Cougars at 1 p.m. Sunday, when left-hander Brian Holmes and right-hander Jordan Jankowski are scheduled to pitch against Kane County left-hander Michael Heesch.

Quad Cities (1-0) jumped on right-hander Pierce Johnson (0-1) for a five-run rally with two outs in the second inning. First baseman Jesse Wierzbicki hit a leadoff single and scored on a two-out RBI single from catcher Roberto Peña. Left fielder Jordan Scott added a single, and second baseman Joe Sclafani reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Then center fielder Teoscar Hernandez grounded an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop, and the Cougars' Marco Hernandez threw wide of second base to allow two more runs to score. With runners at second and third, Correa slapped a line drive inside the third-base line to bring in two runs and make it 5-0.

Velasquez (1-0) rolled through his five innings and allowed only a two-run home run by designated hitter Rock Shoulders in the fourth inning that answered Correa's two-out RBI single in the top of the inning and brought Kane County within 6-2. Velasquez allowed three hits, walked one batter, hit one and struck out five.

Following Velasquez, left-hander Joe Bircher began the sixth inning with a 6-2 lead. After allowing two one-out singles, Bircher induced a ground-ball double play and retired the final 10 Cougars in order, including four on strikeouts. His four shutout innings earned him his first professional save.

Shortstop Carlos Correa to be first No. 1 overall pick playing for Quad Cities since Joe Mauer in 2002

DAVENPORT, Iowa (APRIL 1, 2013) - Baseball fans in the Quad Cities area have seen hundreds of players on their way to major league careers since the Quad Cities franchise since it joined the Midwest League in 1960, and fans will see more history this season, as the Quad Cities River Bandits begin their second affiliation with the Houston Astros. The River Bandits will open the season with four of the top 15 Houston Astros prospects, according to Baseball America, including 2012 No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa.

Correa is the first No. 1 overall draft pick to play for the Quad Cities since Joe Mauer, the No. 1 overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2001, played in the Quad Cities in 2002. Correa is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect in the Astros minor league system and the No. 13 prospect in all of baseball. The River Bandits roster also includes right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers (ranked Houston No. 4 prospect and No. 50 in baseball by Baseball America), infielder Rio Ruiz (No. 8), and right-hander Vincent Velasquez (No. 13).

"For decades, the Quad Cities community has seen future major leaguers play in the Quad Cities, but this season will be something special. In addition to seeing future major league players, for the first time in a decade, our fans will have a chance to see future major league stars," said team owner Dave Heller. "Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers and Rio Ruiz are some of the exciting prospects in all of baseball. The fact that they are coming to the Quad Cities will give River Bandits fans a chance to meet and get autographs and photos with future major league stars right here at Modern Woodmen Park."

The River Bandits have 26 players on their preliminary roster, which is subject to change before Opening Day. Midwest League clubs may have up to 25 active players when the season begins Thursday. The River Bandits roster includes 12 players drafted in 2012, including Correa (first round), McCullers (first supplemental), Ruiz (fourth), right-handed pitcher Daniel Minor (ninth), left-handed pitcher Joe Bircher (10th), outfielder Terrell Joyce (12th), left-handed pitcher Brian Holmes (13th), infielders Joe Sclafani (14th) and Ryan Dineen (25th), and right-handed pitchers John Neely (30th), Mike Hauschild (33rd) and Jordan Jankowski (34th),

Eight River Bandits played on the short-season Class-A Tri-City ValleyCats team that went to the New York-Penn League Championship Series last season. Infielder Jesse Wierzbicki was the ValleyCats Most Valuable Player, while Holmes and catcher Jobduan Morales were each New York-Penn League All-Stars. Baseball America ranked Velasquez as the league's No. 14 prospect following the season.

Also on the roster is outfielder Ariel Ovando, a native of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, who signed with the Astros in 2010 at age 17 for a reported then-club-record $2.6 million bonus that was topped by Correa's reported $4.8 million last season.

"Fans in the Quad Cities will be treated to outstanding talent at Modern Woodmen Park this season," said General Manager Harold Craw. "We are excited to be just days away from welcoming our fans to see some of the best young players in baseball and begin another memorable season at Modern Woodmen Park."
