DES MOINES, IOWA (October 16, 2019) — Thousands of students will vote for their preferred candidates for President,  Senate, and House during Secretary of State Paul Pate’s Iowa Youth Straw Poll on Tuesday, October 29. This will be the first Iowa Youth Straw Poll since a change in Iowa law that allows 17-year-olds to register to vote and participate in primary elections. Next year, they can vote in the Iowa Caucuses and the June primary if they will be 18 by November 3, 2020.

DES MOINES, IOWA (October 3, 2019) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is partnering with laundromat owners across Iowa to raise awareness for Safe at Home, an address confidentiality-program for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and stalking. Sec Pate’s office is sending Safe at Home brochures and stickers to Iowa laundromats, encouraging them to prominently display the materials.

Every school in Iowa that registers at least 90-percent of their eligible students to vote will receive the Carrie Chapman Catt Award, named after the Iowan who was a national leader in the women’s-suffrage movement.

The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) established September as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 to encourage voter participation and increase awareness. Secretary Pate is the President of NASS.

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 27, 2019) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is partnering with the Iowa Cubs to promote the state’s unique first-in-the-nation caucus status and help Cubs fans register to vote. The Iowa Cubs will temporarily change their team name to the Iowa Caucuses for this Friday’s game against the Memphis Redbirds.

DES MOINES, IOWA (August 22, 2019) — City and school elections will be conducted simultaneously this year, on Tuesday, November 5. A law passed by the Iowa Legislature in 2017 ended the long-standing tradition of holding school board elections in September. 

Secretary of State Paul Pate hopes the combined elections will increase voter-participation.
