AMES, IA (06/05/2015)(readMedia)-- Over the course of spring semester, Iowa State University students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences took their learning outside the classroom and into a totally hands-on environment. The students traveled to places like Argentina, Brazil and Costa Rica over Spring Break, and to St. John for the semester, to learn more about chosen areas of study.

Caleb Beer of DE WITT, majoring in Animal Science, traveled to Argentina for a spring break program in which Beer compared production agriculture, business and trade to the U.S.

Kasey Haars of GENESEO, majoring in Agricultural Business, traveled to Argentina for a spring break program in which Haars compared production agriculture, business and trade to the U.S.

Heidi Andresen of DE WITT, majoring in Agriculture and Life Sciences Education, traveled to Costa Rica for a spring break program in which Andresen learned about the wide variety of tropical crops in Costa Rica.

The Agriculture Study Abroad Office in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers high quality international opportunities to students on all seven continents in a variety of programs open to all students in the college. Programs range in length and intensity of curriculum, and may be led by faculty or through an exchange program.

College of Human Sciences scholarship recipents announced

Taylor Borde, from Muscatine, Iowa, will receive the Helen Foster Scholarship. Borde is a junior studying Apparel, Merchandising, and Design.

Kaitlin Clevenger, from Davenport, Iowa, will receive the Betty Kirkbride-Keller Scholarship. Clevenger is a senior studying Event Management.

Vanessa McNeal of Davenport, Iowa (52803), graduated with a degree in child, adult, and family services. McNeal spoke at the Multicultural Student Affairs graduation and recognition celebration on Sunday, May 3.

AMES, IA (05/06/2015)(readMedia)-- A group of 30 Iowa State University undergraduate students stretched their learning through research and laboratory experience in the Science with Practice program. Science with Practice is a learning and work experience program in research and related laboratories for undergraduate students who work closely with faculty and graduate students to gain experience in their field of study. Students participating in Science with Practice this past semester include :

Joshua Byrne, from Davenport and majoring in Animal Ecology, was advised by Dr. Gregory Courtney, professor, on a project titled Iowa Biomonitoring with Aquatic Insects. This project had a goal of creating a simplified dichotomous key of aquatic insects which will be used by middle and high school students. The key involves written characteristics and diagnostic illustrations. Once completed, the aquatic insect key will be employed in educational programs to determine the health of local waterways.

Ellen Kaschke, from East Moline and majoring in Animal Science, was advised by Dr. John Patience, professor, on a project titled Evaluation of Phytase Enzyme and ?-Glucanase in Nuresery Pig Diets. This project was to evaluate effects of adding a phytase enzyme and ?-glucanase on nursery pig performance. A total of 437 weanling pigs were blocked by weight and randomly assigned one of the five dietary treatments. The growth and feed intake was then analyzed for results.

Jacob Smith, from Port Byron and majoring in Horticulture, was advised by Dr. Christopher Currey, assistant professor, on a project titled Quantifying the Effect of Mean Air Temperature on the Development of Annual Culinary Herb Species. This project had a goal to develop models to predict biomass accumulation and determine growth responses to various temperatures. Culinary herbs are a popular food crop to produce in hydroponic production systems in greenhouse and controlled environments. The air temperature has a strong impact on the rate of growth and development.

In the program, students develop individualized learning agreements and project goals with Iowa State faculty mentors. At the conclusion of the semester, participants presented their projects at a poster session open to the public.

AMES, IA (05/01/2015)(readMedia)-- Students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences made up the Iowa State University teams who won the overall award among four-year institutions at the April 8-10 North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference.

Kappeler, a junior in animal science from Muscatine, participated in Ag Computers and Livestock Judging, placing eighth and third respectively .

There were 823 constants at the conference competing on 26 teams from four-year schools and 25 from two-year schools at the event hosted by Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. Iowa State University teams ranked first in agricultural communications, agribusiness, crops, and meat animal and livestock management; were second overall in ag computer skills, livestock judging, dairy judging, and horticulture; and the soil judging team ranked fifth.

NACTA is a professional society founded in 1955. Members include public and private post-secondary schools, with divisions for two- and four-year institutions.

AMES, IA (04/21/2015)(readMedia)-- Brittany Uitermarkt was inducted into Eta Sigma Delta on Thursday, April 2, in a ceremony following dinner held in the Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, in MacKay Hall. Uitermarkt, from Long Grove, Iowa, is a junior studying event management at Iowa State University in the College of Human Sciences.

Eta Sigma Delta is an international honor society that recognizes exceptional academic achievement among event and hospitality students. Undergraduate students who hold a 3.0 minimum grade point average or are in the top 20% of their class are eligible for this distinction. Uitermarkt was one of twenty-one undergraduates inducted this spring.

Phi Upsilon Omicron is a national honor society in family and consumer sciences that promotes academic excellence, develops professional leadership, and encourages professional and personal integrity.

On April 12 the organization inducted eighteen undergraduate College of Human Sciences students. The speaker for the initiation ceremony was Dr. Barbara Woods, College of Human Sciences' Extension and Outreach.

AMES, IA (02/13/2015)(readMedia)-- Isis Devalle, a freshman in the College of Human Sciences studying apparel, merchandising, and design, was selected to represent the College of Human Sciences as an Iowa State University Cyclone Aide for the Summer of 2015. Devalle was one of six students in the College of Human Sciences selected to help facilitate Iowa State University's summer orientations for new students. Devalle is from Bettendorf, Iowa (52722)

Cyclone Aides are undergraduate student leaders who facilitate Orientation and Destination Iowa State throughout the year. Devalle will serve as an orientation leader by providing new students with an introduction to campus and its resources, providing campus and residence hall tours, preparing students for academic advising appointments, serving on information panels, and sharing information about Iowa State with new students and their family members.

Cyclone Aides coordinate the Destination Iowa State program by helping with the selection and supervision of Team Leaders, planning activities and implementing the event. Additionally, Cyclone Aides assist with campus visits and student recruitment throughout the year. Cyclone Aides are an integral part of the Office of New Student Programs.
