In April, public health professionals across the country celebrate National Public Health Week. At the Scott County Health Department, the celebration lasts the entire month! This year, the theme “Public Health Works” was selected to highlight how the public health workforce and public health system strive to improve the health and safety of our community.
Did you eat in a restaurant or shop in a grocery store this week? “Public Health Works” to make sure the food you ate or bought was safe to eat and partners with others to get excess food to agencies that can use it to help feed others. Maybe you traveled over spring break and stayed in a hotel or swam in a swimming pool; “Public Health Works” to keep the rooms and water safe and clean. Have you ever had trouble finding a doctor or dentist who takes your health insurance or needed help getting health insurance? “Public Health Works” by connecting patients to providers to make sure everyone can get the care that they need. Do you have a child or grandchild in day care? “Public Health Works” with child care providers and preschools on creating healthy and safe places for kids to be. Spring can bring severe weather; have you put together an emergency kit? “Public Health Works” to educate people on what kind of supplies they should have. The list of how “Public Health Works” in our community goes on and on!
