Iowa City, IA (April 21, 2016) - Every nurse who walks across the stage on May 1 has a story to tell. In honor of Nurses Week 2016 we hope you’ll join us to celebrate this year’s 100 Great Iowa Nurses. The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on May 1 at the Iowa Events Center Grand Ballroom in Des Moines.

100 Great Iowa Nurses is a nonprofit program that honors great nurses in Iowa, and funds awards to support the education of Iowa nurses. This is the 12th anniversary of the event. The celebration is an annual prelude to National Nurses Week, which begins on May 6 and ends May 12.

One of many stories

In 1978 Carla was 24 years old and enjoying the perfect pregnancy. At six-months pregnant she became ill and something didn’t seem right. Within an hour of visiting the ER with cold and fever symptoms, Carla’s daughter was born 10 weeks early and weighed only three pounds.

Nurses and patients sometimes form lifelong bonds, and that’s exactly what happened over the first few months of that baby’s life in the NICU. Decades later, Carla has reconnected with the nurse who helped her through one of the toughest times in her life. Carla was surprised and elated to learn that the nurse remembers her just as well as she remembers her daughter’s nurse.

Carla’s daughter is a mom herself now. Both women will be at the ceremony to surprise their Great Iowa Nurse. Carla says, “I want her to know how I have been – and will forever be – grateful for her love and care… I know she has been there for so many babies and their families over the last 40 years! A hero, indeed.”

We would love to introduce you to Carla and the nurse who she’ll be celebrating. Also, for the first time in 100 Great Iowa Nurses history, we have a mother and daughter both being honored this year.

This celebration is a statewide event and is made possible through the generous support of both individual and corporate sponsors. Financial contributions not only support the operation of the program, but also financial education awards, which are made available to nursing students in Iowa who want to further their education.

We would like to thank the following sponsors for their tremendous support:

Platinum Sponsor: University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics

Gold Sponsor: UnityPoint Health
