FREEDOM ROCK

Painting of the Freedom Rock on the LeClaire Levee should begin on October 2nd and will only take a week to 10 days to complete. The 7.5 ton granite stone will be covered with a tent during the painting. The artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen, will come out from the tent from time to time to talk to the public. OPENING ON LECLAIRE CITY COUNCIL

As of September 16, 2014, there exists a vacancy on the LeClaire City Council.  It is the intent of the City Council to fill this vacancy by appointment after having solicited and received applications and interviewing prospective candidates. Application forms may be obtained on the City's website (Board & Committee Membership Application), or at City Hall during regular business hours.  To be considered, applications and any other supporting materials should be received by the City Clerk at City Hall no later than the close of business (5:00 p.m.) on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.  Prospective candidates will be interviewed by the City Council at the Committee-of-the-Whole meeting to be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.  This appointment is expected to be formally considered at the Council meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2014 - if within fourteen days after publication of this notice, or within fourteen days after the appointment is made, there is filed with the City Clerk a petition which requests a special election to fill the vacancy, the appointment to fill the vacancy is temporary and the Council shall call a special election to fill the vacancy permanently. October 9th - LeClaire Community Library/LeClaire Chamber of Commerce Business Fair LeClaire Community Library, 5:30p.m. An informational program to help drive new interest in opening a business in LeClaire. Programs include How to Obtain Small Business Loans, SCORE Business Mentoring Program, Tax Increment Financing (TIF) 101, and Local Businesses & Local Libraries Working Together. Individuals from the Chamber and a small panel of business owners will speak. Free event, open to the public. September 21st through October 26th - Dahl Ford - "Underwear Because We Care!" Every year hundreds of people in the Quad Cities go without the basic necessity of undergarments. This is a campaign to collect & distribute the necessity to those who are in need. We will be collecting these donated items for men, women & kids: New Underwear, New Socks, New Bras, New Undershirts & Camisoles, Lightly Used Prosthetic Bras. Please drop items off at Dahl Ford, 1310 E. Kimberly Road, Davenport.

 

September 26th - Wide River Winery - Live Music The Whoosdads? 5-8 p.m.

 

September 27th - LeClaire Riverfront Farmer's Market 3-6pm on the Levee along the river. Many great vendors will be in attendance with fresh, organic produce, sweet corn, baked goods, kettle corn, wood fire pizza, and much more!

October 7th - "Coffee and Conversation" - Princeton Community Center free event 8-10a.m. Community Center Board members will welcome residents of Princeton and surrounding communities for free coffee and good conversation. Event Chair, Val Rasche, will introduce Princeton Police Chief Carsten who will give short report of safety issues in our community and will gather prescription drugs from the public for disposal - a short question and answer session will follow. Board member, Penne Miller, encourages everyone to enjoy a beautiful autumn morning along the River. The Princeton Community Center, also known as the Boll's Building, was built in 1908 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

 

October 9th - Expressions in Threads Lunch & Lecture Nationally known quilt designer and author, Judy Martin, will speak and present a trunk show of her quilts to be followed by lunch catered by Big Dave and Holly's. Cost $40. Call 563-289-1447 for reservations and information.

October 12th - LeClaire Lion's Club - Apple Fest on the River 11a.m. - 4p.m. on the Levee and downtown LeClaire.

Fun, Family Event featuring apples, apple cider and variety of homemade food items including pie, strudel, scones, and cupcakes, a huge truckload of pumpkins and guards. Also, popcorn, handmade aprons, sweaters, purses, jewelry, bath items, copper jewelry, garden art and many other unique items.

Register at Aunt Hattie's for the 2nd Annual Apple Fest Apple Pie Baking Contest! Deliver 2 identical homemade apple pies in disposable pans from 9a.m. to no later than 11:00 a.m., October 12 to Aunt Hattie's. Proceeds from entry fees of $10 and sales of pies after the 11 a.m. judging will go to Freedom Rock of Scott County, LeClaire. Top 3 winners will receive cash prizes! You can also donate a pie to be sold even if you do not want to be judged. Stop by Aunt Hattie's for more information!

The LeClaire Lions Club will be selling chili, brats, hot dogs/chili dogs and pork chop sandwiches. Antique Cars will be displayed on the levee. "Kids Only" area on levee for a small fee that includes face painting, beanbag toss and other children's games along with a jump house. Specialty items related to Apple Fest will be available at downtown businesses along with wonderful fall shopping and dining. The Lions Club's involvement in LeClaire includes various community improvements and programs. The Club has made donations to the LeClaire Police Department, LeClaire and Princeton Fire Departments, LeClaire Library, Levee improvements, Parks and Recreation, and they provide a $1,000 college scholarship to a local Pleasant Valley high school student every year. They have offered financial support for the Freedom Rock project. They also assist those in the community in need of glasses and hearing aids.  Proceeds from the Apple Fest help further the LeClaire Lions Club's community efforts.

Ascentra Credit Union is pleased to announce that Larry Ridenour was awarded the 2014 Volunteer Cooperative Spirit Award for exemplifying the spirit of the credit union industry and the communities they serve. The Iowa Credit Union League (ICUL) honored six credit union representatives at the Iowa Credit Union Convention held September 17-19 at the Grand River Center in Dubuque. Larry has served as a board member for Ascentra Credit Union for 23 years. During this time, he has served as chairperson, vice-chairperson and has chaired a number of committees. He also led the credit union in forming the Ascentra Credit Union Foundation.

LeClaire Community Library SHIIP Medicare Enrollment Assistance. A representative from SHIIP will be here on Oct. 14th, Oct. 28th, November 4th, and November 18th from 12-3pm to answer any questions community-area seniors may have regarding Open Enrollment for Medicare. SHIIP is a service of the State of Iowa. All services are free, confidential and objective.

LeClaire Community Library A new Toddle Time story hour has been added. Starting in September, Caregivers can now bring babies and tiny tots to Toddle Time on Wednesday OR Friday mornings at 10:30am. Family Storytime will continue on its usual Tuesday nights at 6:30pm.

First Presbyterian Church, LeClaire Men's group Saturday at 7:30 am at church; there are donuts, coffee, discussion and Bible Study, plus really great guys! What more could you ask?
