All nine batters in lineup get hits, Abreu and Dorris shut down Snakes in series finale
APPLETON, Wisc. - The Quad Cities River Bandits plated three runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 5-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Wednesday's series finale at Fox Cities Stadium. Jacob Dorris tossed the final 3.1 innings without allowing a run and Connor Goedert had the game winning hit, his second RBI in as many games with the Bandits this season.
The River Bandits (4-10) matched their season high in both runs in a game and hits in a game (11) in the win over Wisconsin (5-9). Quad Cities broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth when Johnny Sewald legged out a double, stole third and scored when Goedert lofted a single into center field. Brooks Marlow followed with a double, scoring Kyle Tucker, before a bobble in the outfield allowed Goedert to score as well to finish off the three-run frame.
Albert Abreu showed why he's a top prospect in the Astros' organization in his second start of the season. He allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out six Rattlers. The big hit against him was a two-run triple by Luis Aviles in the fifth inning, which tied the game at 2-2.
After Abreu struck out the first two hitters of the sixth inning, pitch count forced him to leave the game. Jacob Dorris picked up right where Abreu left off. Dorris (1-0) did not allow a baserunner until the ninth inning, giving just one bloop single and a walk while striking out four to get the win.
Bobby Wernes got the scoring started for Quad Cities with an RBI-double in the third. Aaron Mizell led off the inning with a single and scored on Wernes' first RBI of the season. Wernes would score later in the inning on a single by Daz Cameron.
The three-run eighth came against David Lucroy (0-1), who gave up the three runs on three hits and an error in his only inning of work. Jon Perrin allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts, taking a no-decision in his third start of the season.
The Bandits have now won both of their three-game series this season, taking two of three from Peoria last week. They've been swept in both four-game sets, including the home series against Kane County last weekend.
The Bandits will get a chance at redemption against the Cougars this weekend, heading to Kane County for a four-game weekend series against the Cougars. The series begins Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. CT at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Matt Bower (0-0, 2.16) gets the start for the Bandits against reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week Justin Donatella (2-0, 0.00) for the Cougars. You can hear all the action with Jake Levy, starting with the Lloyd Agencies Pregame Show, at 6:15 on flagship K-BOB 1170 AM, on riverbandits.com and on the TuneIn app.
