Grassley:  U.S. Military Academy Selects Bettendorf Student

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Robert Martin Beardsley has received a fully qualified offer of appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King Point for the 2016-2017 school year.

Beardsley is the son of Kim and Bob Beardsley of Bettendorf.  He will graduate in May from Pleasant Valley High School.  Beardsley is the captain of the track, cross country and swimming teams at his high school. Beardsley also participates in wrestling and the student council in addition to serving his community through his rank as an Eagle Scout and his involvement with the St. John Vianney’s Church Youth Group.

“Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor,” Grassley said.  “Young people like Robert work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity, and I join many others, no doubt, in wishing him well and expressing appreciation for his commitment to serving our nation.”

Beardsley was among the 41 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies.  Upon receiving an appointment, the student then decides whether to attend the academy.  Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website.

For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.
