The cities of Moline and Rock Island will receive a $514,000 grant for the construction of the north connector of the West Rock River Bridge Trail, and Moline will receive $701,845 for the Western Illinois University River Tech Streetscape. The Moline and Rock Island grants are part of the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, the latest round of which includes more than 100 projects totaling $60 million. The grants are to improve the quality of life in Illinois by promoting alternative transportation, such as bike/hike trails and preserving transportation-related resources.

The Niabi Zoo announced the addition of a new baby girl born May 17 at the zoo. She weighed in at 70 pounds and was 33 inches tall - not a bad size for a plains zebra. Mother and baby are doing fine. Patients can now keep their pertinent health information in one handy location with wallet-sized cards available at all three Trinity campuses. Printed in both English and Spanish, "Your Health Fact Cards" have room for a complete listing of medications, immunization dates, allergies, height and weight, blood type, medical history (including major illnesses and operations), and whether a person has an advanced-care plan and its location. Patients also should list any vitamins, herbals, supplements, and over-the-counter medications that they take. To receive a card, stop by the information desk at any Trinity campus. There is no cost to receive a card.

 

The United Way announced at its annual meeting on June 7 that it collected more than $8.8 million in its annual campaign. This year United Way has set a $9-million fundraising goal. The United Way also awarded three new honors. The United Way Inspiration Award was given to Shechinah Tinsley from United Township High School for her active leadership and commitment to the community. The Impact Leader Award was given to Bill Leaver, a mentor who helped Big Brothers/Big Sisters expand its impact from 200 mentoring matches to more than 600 within two years. And the Admiration Award went to Bob Vogelbaugh, also known as Mr. Thanksgiving, who is now helping and counseling impaired students. - Eric Junco

 

Churches United announced the receipt of a $15,000 grant from the Oscar Mayer Division of Kraft Food in support of its Hunger Program. The mission of Churches United of the Quad City Area is to increase the expression of unity among Christian churches and empower them for service. Churches United supports this call by reaching out cooperatively, with sensitivity and responsiveness, to community needs with specific programs and by building networks of support throughout the Quad Cities. Churches United is also an information clearinghouse where individuals in need are directed to appropriate "help" agencies. The Hunger Program includes 23 food pantries and three meal sites that serve Scott and Rock Island counties.

 

The Rock Island Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications. All organizations interested in requesting funding must complete a brief application form. Grants are awarded annually to not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations, and applications must be postmarked by June 30. The Rock Island Community Foundation is a community organization that was formed in 1967 for the purpose of promoting the civic needs and general welfare of the City of Rock Island and surrounding areas. The Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau is offering bikes that can be rented for River Action's Ride the River event on Sunday, June 18. They can be rented by reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. There are many sizes available, and each rental includes a helmet and a lock. Renters can pick up bikes at Union Station, 102 South Harrison Street in Davenport, on Sunday morning and return them that afternoon.
