The world`s shortest story was written by Augusto Monterroso: "Upon waking, the dinosaur was still there." We`re not asking you to replicate that feat, but we are asking for your entries in a limbo contest for fiction writing. Can you go this low? Can you write a good story in fewer than 200 words?

That`s your challenge in the River Cities` Reader fiction contest.

The top three entries, as well as other notable stories, will be published in our April 21, 2004, issue.

Hints:

• Most good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an ending; a plot; conflict; and character development.

• Several anthologies of "short short stories" are available for examples, including the Sudden Fiction series and Micro-Fiction.

Rules:

• Stories, including titles, must be 200 words or less. Efforts to circumvent the word limit will result in disqualification, and the Reader will make the final judgment on word count. If you`re not sure, leave some breathing room.

• Entries must be typed.

• Entries must include the author`s name, address, and daytime phone number.

• Entries must be previously unpublished.

• You`re welcome to submit as many stories as you like, but we will publish a maximum of one story per author.

All entries must be received by Friday, April 2, 2004, at 5 p.m.
