BETTENDORF, IOWA (May 18, 2021) — The CDC announced last week its amended recommendations for masking of fully vaccinated individuals. However, the agency also noted that schools should continue to use current COVID-19 prevention strategies for at least the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic school year. Regardless, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recommending that schools eliminate mask requirements.

The health and safety of our students are a top priority at Rivermont. Following CDC and Scott County Health Department (SCHD) guidance, we have remained in person for the entire 2020/21 school year. We trust the science and the health professionals.

According to the CDC:

  • Scott County continues to see high transmission-rates.
  • Children can transmit to both family members and other children and adults with whom they come into contact, even when the infected child has minimal or no symptoms and is not recognized as the source. This includes transmission to others at high risk for serious outcomes.
  • While vaccinations are now available for adolescents 12-15 and older, few have started, and even fewer will have completed their series plus the 14 days required to be considered fully vaccinated before school is out.

With anxiety running high among teachers, administrators, and parents about whether or not schools should require masks, we want our community to know that Rivermont Collegiate will continue to follow CDC and SCHD guidance and require masks for the foreseeable future.
