Over the next decade, we will be working to create millions of jobs in new and growing industries. Unfortunately, the gap between the skills needed for these jobs and the skills of today’s workforce could leave many of these new positions unfilled. That means hardworking Iowans may lose access to good paying jobs, through no fault of their own. As I’ve met with businesses across Iowa, I have heard that many are already struggling to find skilled workers to fill new jobs in high-growth industries such as advanced manufacturing, construction, finance, and healthcare. We need to make sure that our schools and training programs are preparing Iowans to succeed in tomorrow’s economy.
That’s why I helped start the 21st Century Skills Caucus, which I am proud to co-chair. As a former educator, I know that today’s students will need more than just the basics to succeed in the workforce of the future. We must start preparing our students today for the jobs of tomorrow. The 21st Century Skills Caucus is working to integrate the skills of the future into our nation’s education system, including in rural school districts.
We owe it to younger Iowans to prepare them for a life full of success, and to make sure that all students of every age are receiving the innovative learning opportunities they need to grow and thrive in their future career. I look forward to working with the members of 21st Century Skills Caucus to accomplish this goal, and hearing from Iowans about how we can teach students today for the jobs of tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Dave Loebsack
