QUAD-CITIES—Xstream Cleanup made big changes in 2016, and the results are in.

“We’re proud to announce that the new Xstream Cleanup broke its annual volunteer record and is off to a strong start. Our volunteers are advancing the mission to make a difference in our local environment and in water quality specifically,” says Curtis Lundy, longtime event chair.

In 2016 Xstream Cleanup volunteers worked a total of 4,419 hours on 30 projects. They cleaned up 12,440 pounds of garbage, planted 150,000 acorns and 1,300 trees, and cleared invasive species from 3.2 acres, among other accomplishments highlighted in the inaugural Annual Letter & Snapshot of Success, available on the website, www.xstreamcleanup.org.

Xstream Cleanup continues to provide volunteer opportunities year-round. Event information is posted to www.xstreamcleanup.org early spring through late fall. Currently there are 10 events on the calendar for dates March through May 2017. Through the website, volunteers also may subscribe to Xstream Cleanup newsletters, which are e-mailed quarterly.

Xstream Cleanup was first held in 2004. For a dozen years, volunteers at multiple sites made a difference by working for three hours one Saturday in August. In 2016 the planning group behind Xstream decided to take a different approach and replace the one-day event with an array of environmental events throughout the year.

Xstream Cleanup continues to be made possible by generous support provided by Regional Development Authority, Arconic, Triumph Community Bank, Iowa American Water, Rock Island County Waste Management Agency, Alter Metal Recycling, McCarthy Bush Corporation, MidAmerican Energy, Quad City Conservation Alliance, Sears Seating, Wallace’s Garden Center, and Radish Magazine.
