Kernels use three-run fourth to earn series split

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The River Bandits lost 6-2 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. Clark Beeker earned his team-leading seventh win for Cedar Rapids. Caleb Hamilton and Ben Rortvedt hit back-to-back homeruns for the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids (2-2, 41-33) took the lead in the first inning. With Travis Blankenhorn at first, Amaurys Minier doubled down the left field line. The Kernels extended their 1-0 lead with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by back-to-back solo homeruns by Hamilton and Rortvedt. Ray Henderson got the Bandits (2-2, 39-33) on the board with an RBI double in the fifth, but the Kernels responded with a two-spot in the top of the seventh to charge ahead 6-1. After the Bandits loaded the bases in the eighth, Ronnie Dawson bounced into a fielder’s choice to cut the margin to 6-2 Cedar Rapids.

Beeker (7-2) went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits. Max Cordy and Hector Lujan teamed up to finish the game out of the pen for Cedar Rapids, holding the Bandits to just an unearned run. In the loss for Quad Cities, Blanco surrendered four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings.

Quad Cities wins second straight one-run game

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The River Bandits defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-2 on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park in front of 5,862 fans. Daz Cameron and Ronnie Dawson homered to pace the Bandits offense. Carson LaRue picked up the win on the mound.

Cedar Rapids (1-2, 40-33) scored the first run of the night in the second inning. Amaurys Minier belted a solo home run to make it 1-0 Kernels. In the top of the fourth Minier’s RBI double extended the cushion to 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Dawson’s home run evened the score at two. The following inning, Cameron hit a solo shot to push the Bandits ahead for good.

LaRue (8-2) tied a career-high with eight strikeouts over six innings. LaRue allowed two runs and five hits. Kevin Hill followed LaRue out of the bullpen. Hill tossed three shutout innings, earning the save. Hill stranded the bases loaded in the ninth. Domenick Carlini took the loss for the Kernels. Carlini (3-6) went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Two home runs power Bandits to win

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The River Bandits defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-6 on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park in front of 5,969 fans. Yohan Ramirez earned the win. Daz Cameron and Wander Franco both went deep for Quad Cities.

Cedar Rapids (1-1, 40-32) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lewin Diaz singled home Aaron Whitefield. The Bandits (1-1, 38-32) tied the score in the second. Bryan De La Cruz’s RBI single plated Troy Sieber. Quad Cities hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Sieber laced an RBI single and Daz Cameron belted a two-run homer to left to make it 4-1 Quad Cities. In the sixth, Franco provided insurance with a two-run home run to right, extending the margin to 6-1. Cedar Rapids scored in the seventh to cut the deficit to four, but stranded two runners. De La Cruz’s second RBI single of the night padded the Bandits’ lead to 7-2 in the eighth. Cedar Rapids scored four in the ninth, including a Caleb Hamilton three-run homer.

Ramirez (1-1) went five innings, allowed one run, four hits and struck out five while walking two. Carlos Sanabria provided 1.2 innings of relief. Despite walking five batters, Sanabria allowed just one run and one hit. Salvador Montano did not allow a run over his 1.1 innings of relief. Erasmo Pinales loaded the bases in the ninth and surrendered four runs, but recovered to close out the win. Sean Poppen received the loss for Cedar Rapids. Poppen (5-2) allowed six runs over six innings.

Quad Cities manages two hits in loss

DAVENPORT, Iowa – The River Bandits lost to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-0 on Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Eduardo Del Rosario earned the win for Cedar Rapids on the mound. Lewin Diaz belted a solo homerun for the Kernels.

The Kernels (1-0) scored first in the top of the third inning. Jermaine Palacios singled home Ben Rortvedt with two outs to make it 1-0 Cedar Rapids. The Kernels used a two-out single again in the sixth to stretch the lead to 2-0. Travis Blankenhorn rolled a hit into right field to plate Brandon Lopez. Diaz’s homerun in the eighth made it 3-0 Cedar Rapids. After Aaron Whitefiled reached third on a three-base throwing error by Bandits’ third baseman Wander Franco with one out in the ninth, Travis Blankenhorn grounded out to first to extend the margin to 4-0.

Del Rosario (7-3) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and walking one. Colton Davis threw two perfect innings in relief, making way for Hector Lujan to shut the door in the ninth out of the Cedar Rapids bullpen. Forrest Whitley took the loss for the Bandits. Whitley (2-3) lasted four innings, allowed one run, four hits and struck out seven.
