Middle Amana, Iowa- The Amana Heritage Society will offer a summer and fall series of unique Communal Dining Experiences at the Communal Kitchen Museum (1003 26th Ave) in Middle Amana. Join us each month from July through September for an authentic communal meal as it was prepared and eaten during communal times in the Amana Colonies. The first meal of the series is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Friday, May 25th. The cost is $25 with seating limited to 24 diners and reservations and prepayment required. Arrive early for check-in.
Dine in the only remaining communal kitchen in the Amana Colonies. Known locally as the Ruedy Kitchen, this kitchen house remains as it was before the Great Change of 1932, when the colonists voted to abandon communal living. Dine among the artifacts eating the same food villagers enjoyed. How do Hühnersoße and Kartoffelklöße sound? How about boiling beef and Spinat? We serve the best Mattekuchen this side of Frankfurt.
Guests will learn how village life worked over a century ago during an informative walking tour. Middle Amana boasts dozens of historic homes built between 1862 and 1875. Learn where the villagers worked, ate, and worshipped. Along the way, you’ll see unique architecture and learn how they constructed their sturdy homes.
During the 2018 Centennial of World War I, learn how the pacifistic colonists suffered anti-German sentiment from their neighbors through ongoing negative press, an angry mob, threats of violence, and the need to continually prove their loyalty during the difficult times.
