DES MOINES, IA (08/01/2017) (readMedia)-- Six wines made from Iowa-grown grapes won Double Gold awards in the Iowa State Fair Commercial Wine competition judged prior to the start of the 2017 Fair.

Vignoles from Backcountry Winery of Stratford was selected for the top honor, Governor's Cup, as well as the Best of Show White. Ackerman Winery of Amana brought home the Best of Show Fruit with Cranberry and Apple from the Blended Fruit category. For the second straight year, Marquette's Eagles Landing Winery was awarded Best of Show Other for Autumn Splendor. Best of Show Red went to Kate produced by Train Wreck Winery of Algona.

To achieve the honor of Double Gold status, the wine must be awarded gold by all judges. The competition uses an awards system based on how the wine should be shared. A Gold award means the wine is one you would be "proud to take to a dinner or party." A Silver award denotes a wine that you would be "proud to serve to friends in your home," while a Bronze award signifies a wine that a person "will enjoy drinking at home." The judges selected winners through a blind taste test of 178 wines entered by 32 Iowa wineries. Over 128 wines were given awards.

All four of the Best of Show award-winning wines will be available at Grandfather's Barn each day of the Fair from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Samples are $1 each or six for $5. Bottles of State Fair White and State Fair Red wines will be available for $15.
