About the Film:

“Jazz Exodus" - A Narrative Journey of the legendary Jazz Musician Laurdine “Pat” Patrick, funded by the Humanities Iowa and the Riverboat Development Authority.

The Jazz Exodus Project is an exploration of Black music, culture and the people that migrated up the Mississippi River to Midwestern cities. The documentary highlights the life & music of Pat Patrick, a prominent jazz musician from the Quad Cities. Laurdine Kenneth "Pat" Patrick, born on November 23, 1929, in the Quad Cities, was best known for his 40-year association with Sun Ra. Pat Patrick played baritone saxophone, alto saxophone, and Fender bass.

According to the US Federal Census of 1930-40 Laurdine Patrick Sr, lived with his wife in the Quad Cities. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as a janitor, and his wife La Verne worked as a maid the Blackhawk Hotel. Laurdine Sr. was born in Kansas in 1905. He also was a gifted musician who played the trumpet and influenced his son to play music. Jazz musician Clark Terry, who lived with the Patricks for a while, also had a musical influence on young Pat.

Between the years 1915 to 1930, an estimated one million six hundred thousand African-Americans moved from rural areas in the South to urban areas in the North, Midwest, and West, this was known as "The Great Rural-Urban Migration."  The exodus of African-Americans from the South to the North and the Midwest can be viewed as the beginning of the mass migration that took place in the early part of the twentieth century. With the advent of each migration, Black Americans left a cultural and musical footnote in every city and town they passed through.
