CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (April 8, 2024) As Earth Day approaches, Goodwill of the Heartland is proud to announce a partnership of local organizations for “Earth Day in Action,” a two-day event aimed at promoting sustainability, community engagement and environmental stewardship. Taking place Friday, April 19, noon-5PM, and Saturday, April 20, 9AM-12PM, at the former Collins Road Hy-Vee parking lot located at 279 Collins Rd NE in Cedar Rapids, the event invites residents to donate their unwanted or unused items for worthy causes.

“Earth Day in Action” offers a unique opportunity for individuals to make a tangible impact on the environment while supporting local community groups and non-profits. Donation stations will accept a wide range of goods, while some groups will provide Earth Day-related merchandise, such as seeds for plants that butterflies love. The event aims to foster a culture of sustainability and responsibility toward our community and our planet.

"We are thrilled to host ‘Earth Day in Action’ and bring the community together for a common purpose — protecting and preserving the environment," said Stacie Johnson, Goodwill’s sustainability manager. "By providing a convenient one-stop, drive-up location for donations, we hope to encourage participation and make it easy for individuals to contribute."

This promises to be a transformative event, uniting organizations and people from all walks of life in a shared commitment to local solutions and sustainability. Working together, we can make a difference, fully utilize the resources already in our community, and pave the way for a greener future.

“This event exemplifies the power of collaboration and collective action in addressing environmental challenges,” said Vice President of Operations Jessica Schamberger. “By supporting ‘Earth Day in Action,’ participants not only contribute to the local environment but also support local organizations, fostering a stronger, more resilient community.”
