BETENDORF, IOWA (December 1, 2022) — The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is seeking volunteers to support students competing at the upcoming FIRST LEGO League robotics qualifying event on Saturday, December 3, at The Rust Belt in East Moline. Approximately 150 students ages nine to fourteen from 22 Illinois teams built robots and prepared presentations to compete for awards and a chance to advance to next level competitions.

MOLINE, ILLINOIS (December 3, 2021) — Twenty-one teams will take part at an internationally based robotics competition, FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge (ages 9 to 14), hosted by the Quad Cities Engineering & Science Council at the John Deere Pavilion in downtown Moline.

DAVENPORT, IOWA (November 20, 2021) — Dozens of Iowa youth will take part at an internationally-based robotics competition, FIRST® LEGO® League (ages 9 to 14), hosted by the Quad Cities Engineering and Science Council along with Iowa State University College of Engineering at the Putnam Museum and Science Center.

BETTENDORF, IOWA (December 6, 2019) — Creativity, engineering, and high energy will come together this weekend at the 11th Annual, Quad Cities — Davenport

John Deere World Headquarters will play host to the 2015-2016 FTC Kick-Off on Saturday, September 12.  The event is put on by John Deere, QCESC (Quad Cities Engineer and Science Council), and the Quad Cities FTC Community. The Kick-Off will feature breakout sessions to learn more about different aspects of FTC from 8-11 AM and the highlight will be the game reveal at 11 AM.

FIRST®, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a global nonprofit organization with the mission to inspire the next generation of technology leaders. FIRST Tech Challenge, designed for students from 7th - 12th grades, kicks off its season with the annual game reveal each September.  This marks the start of a process of designing and building robots to compete in the game.

Of note this year is a new control system just introduced by FIRST. The new robot control system is Android based, with Android devices on both the robot itself, and in the hands of drivers. This represents the first large scale application of the Android operating system in student based robotics.

Now FIRST Tech Challenge teams can program robots while learning to design apps. Perhaps even more important, the native language of Android is Java, the same programming language high school students are learning and the basis for their AP programming coursework. Learning to code and develop apps, while creating a robot and competing against other teams, is a first for Android and an exciting way to engage the next generation of programmers, app developers, and engineers. In fact, mobile device designers are one of the hottest

FTC Iowa will compete in a League Format throughout November and December with the League Championship will take place at Davenport West High School on Saturday, February 6, 2016.  FTC Illinois will compete at various locations throughout the state including Peoria and Chicago.  Last year, the Combustible Lemons (Davenport West) and Deviation from the Norm (Pleasant Valley) had exceptional seasons, both making it to the North-Super Regional and the Combustible Lemons going to the World Championship. Students who participate in FIRST Tech Challenge are eligible for over $16 million in college scholarships provided by participating universities and sponsors. The public is invited to the kickoff to learn more about FIRST Tech Challenge, start a team, or volunteer.

Local Children Apply Research and Robotics To Explore Natural Disasters with FIRST ® LEGO®
League "NATURE'S FURY?" Challenge

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is proud to host the FIRST® LEGO® League tournaments in the Quad Cities for the 5th year. In 2009, the first tournament was held at the Putnam Museum in Davenport with 13 teams. In 2013, there will be 109 FIRST LEGO League and Junior FIRST LEGO League teams participating with 700+ students at 3 separate events. The events are being supported by 150+ volunteers including from John Deere, Exelon, Alcoa, 3M, the Arsenal, and the National Weather Service.

Area children, ages 9 to 16 (9 to 14 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), are among the record 230,000 children around the world who have risen to the 2013 FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) "NATURE'S FURY?" Challenge. To successfully complete the Challenge, teams of young people must build and program a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot to complete missions on a thematic playing surface, and conduct research to discover what can be done when intense natural events meet the places people live, work, and play. Through hands-on experience and working in teams, children have a chance to explore a real-world issue to gain an appreciation for and interest in science and technology.

Teams of 2-10 local children go head to head, putting approximately 8 weeks of research, design, and programming to the test in a regional FLL Championship Tournament to win honors and recognition. The FLL season will culminate with the FLL World Festival at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, April 23-26, 2014. Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL®) children (ages 6-9) display LEGO models and research projects based on the "DISASTER BLASTER" Challenge theme. To learn more about the "NATURE'S FURY?" Challenge, go to www.FIRSTLEGOLeague.org .

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

o December 7th 7:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. at John Deere Middle School (2035 11th Street, Moline, IL) with 26 teams. This event also includes a Junior FIRST® LEGO® League Expo

o December 14th and 15th in Davenport at the Putnam Museum with 32 teams each day along with 18 Junior FIRST LEGO League Teams at an expo.

The events are free and open to the public. More information is available at www.qcesc.org including pictures from past events. For further information, please contact Pat Barnes at barnespatricko@johndeere.com or (563) 370-5513.
