Coal Valley, IL - October 1, 2015 - Niabi Zoo has announced a naming contest for their female babe Black and White Colobus monkey, which was born on September 1, 2015.
Three finalist names have been chosen for zoo visitors to vote on and choose their favorite. The naming contest will run until October 19.
With this format, zoo visitors who vote will not just be choosing a name for the new monkey, but will also be supporting the zoo. "We're asking visitors to cast their vote with the pocket change," says Zoo Director Marc Heinzman, "and the name with the highest dollar amount will win." According to Heinzman, all proceeds raised from the naming contest will go toward ongoing improvements to Niabi Zoo's animal habitats and facilities.
The three finalist name choices and their meanings are Adina (she has saved), Raziya (sweet, agreeable), and Makeda (magnificent). The ballot boxes are located in front of the African Treetops colobus monkey habitat at Niabi Zoo.
Niabi Zoo is currently open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Sunday from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Last admission each day is at 3:00pm.

Coal Valley, IL - September 11, 2015 - Niabi Zoo has completed renovations of its giraffe building to enhance the level of care provided to its giraffe herd. Renovations include a new textured flooring surface in the giraffe holding stalls to help keep the giraffes' hooves trimmed to a proper length and an anti-microbial wall coating to allow animal care to keep the stalls virus and bacteria free.

All of the materials for this project, known as ZooSpec Antimicrobial Floor & Wall systems, were donated in-kind by Protective Industrial Polymers. ZooSpec Antimicrobial Floor & Wall systems have been specifically developed to not only withstand the daily rigors of a zoo environment, but also provide a comprehensive approach to controlling microbe growth, as well as offer enhanced safety benefits. Niabi Zoo sought out the ZooSpec system of products will not support growth of various molds, bacteria, mildew and fungus. The textured flooring also will keep the giraffes' hooves worn down to an appropriate level as they walk around on it.

"We are happy to have completed these improvements to our giraffe building," said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman, "and we are absolutely thrilled that Protective Industrial Polymers was kind enough to donate all of the materials for this project." Heinzman said that this project was essential to improving the care of Niabi Zoo's giraffes. "It's important to us that we provide the best care possible, and this new ZooSpec system allows us to minimize the growth of potentially harmful agents while also improving the hoof care of the giraffes." Giraffe hooves must be kept from overgrowth in order to prevent the development of injury. With its Fall Hours beginning September 14th PM Tuesday through Saturday, and 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. Coal Valley, IL - September 10, 2015 - Niabi Zoo has announced the birth of a baby Black and White Colobus monkey. The baby, a female, was born on September 1 to Shirati, a 12 year old female. This is the eighth baby for Shirati. The Colobus monkey troop's adult male, Tuli, is the father. The baby has not been named.

Zookeepers found that the baby had been born upon an early morning check that day. Shirati, who had been known to be pregnant, was cradling the baby in her arms and allowing her to nurse. As time has gone on, some of the other females in the troop have begun to serve as babysitters for Shirati from time to time. The new baby will be on display daily with her mother (weather permitting) at the African Treetops exhibit. Plans for a naming contest will be announced soon.

"We're so thrilled to have yet another healthy and thriving baby Colobus monkey," said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman. "Niabi Zoo is known in the Zoo field for having one of the most successful breeding programs for this species, and this birth is a continuation of that."

Black and White Colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) are native to the forests of west-central and east Africa. Females give birth after a 6 month pregnancy to babies which are pure white in color with pink faces. At the age of about 1 month, they begin to change to more closely resemble the black and white coats of adults. Colobus monkeys in the wild are threatened by deforestation and the bush meat trade.

Coal Valley, IL - July 7, 2015 - Niabi Zoo announced today that its male giraffe calf, Genesis, was euthanized due to ongoing difficulty recovering from a leg injury. His injury occurred a few days after his birth in February when his mother, Mimi, inadvertently stepped on him and damaged a tendon in his front left leg.

Niabi Zoo's veterinary staff had been providing constant treatment to his injured leg, but after nearly five months he had shown no significant signs of recovery. The healing process continued to be complicated by his rapid growth. "At this stage of development, Genesis was growing several inches per week, which had him at nearly eight feet tall and weighing several hundred pounds," said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman. "As he continued to grow so rapidly, that meant more and more weight for his injured leg to bear which was not conducive to the healing process."

Heinzman said reparative surgery was not an option, again because of Genesis's rapid growth rate. "Surgery on his damaged tendon was not something we could consider because he was growing faster than he could heal, in addition to it being nearly impossible to keep him off of that leg after surgery to allow it to recover properly."
"We're deeply saddened at his loss," said Heinzman, "but this extremely difficult decision was made for the sake of his welfare. The level of care provided by our animal keepers and veterinary staff was nothing short of exemplary, but the decision came down to our assessment that he is not able to heal properly and was most likely experiencing significant pain as his injury continued to linger."

The calf has been sent to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, where a veterinary pathologist will complete a full necropsy (animal autopsy).

Coal Valley, IL - June 16, 2015 - Niabi Zoo visitors have become much more than just zoo visitors for the 2015 season and beyond. With its new Quarters for Conservation program, the Zoo has empowered its guests to become wildlife heroes.

Quarters for Conservation is a new initiative that was launched in earnest at the beginning of Niabi Zoo's 2015 season. Through this program, twenty-five cents from each paid admission is automatically contributed to Niabi Zoo's conservation fund, which supports multiple conservation projects taking place around the world. With thousands of visitors each year, these quarters are adding up to be a significant help for animals.

Not only are Niabi Zoo visitors contributing to global conservation efforts, they determine where their contribution goes. Upon entry into the Zoo, each visitor receives a token to cast their vote for one of four featured conservation projects. This token represents their twenty-five cent contribution and each conservation project will receive funding according to how votes are cast. Niabi Zoo visitors may also contribute their spare change to any of the conservation causes if they would like to support wildlife conservation even further.

"We are very excited to launch our Quarters for Conservation program," said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman, "and we have heard incredible feedback from our visitors as well." Heinzman said that Quarters for Conservation is a way for Niabi Zoo visitors to know that their visit to the Zoo actually means something and has an impact on global conservation. "We have been using the slogan 'Change for Change' when talking about this program, and it has really proven true as these small donations are turning into a driving force for the protection of wild animals and wild places."

Quarters for Conservation's inaugural slate of conservation projects represents a variety of animals and field work being done by globally respected organizations. Zoo visitors can vote to support the Snow Leopard Trust, the Jaguar Conservation Fund, The Ruaha Carnivore Project, or Association Mitsinjo. The projects supported by Niabi Zoo's Quarters for Conservation may change from year to year. Nearly $30,000 has been raised so far.
