Allison Shanks of Bettendorf is a Top Student at Butler University

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (04/07/2014)(readMedia)-- Allison Shanks from Bettendorf, Iowa, is among the Top 100 Students at Butler University. Shanks, a biology major, expects to graduate in 2014.

The Butler Alumni Association sponsors Top 100 Student Recognition to pay tribute to the talent and dedication of outstanding Butler students. The recipients are nominated by students, faculty, and staff members for their outstanding character, scholarship, and leadership. The recognition honors those who give unselfishly of themselves and who are highly regarded by the entire University community.

Area Residents Make the Dean's List at Butler University

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (01/31/2014)(readMedia)-- The following local residents were among 763 students from Butler University who made the Dean's List for the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year:

Aaron Brenner of Sterling. Brenner is studying Chemistry.

Allison Shanks of Bettendorf. Shanks is studying Biology.

Tessa Sommers of Coal Valley. Sommers is studying Music Performance.

Butler is a nationally recognized comprehensive university encompassing six colleges: Arts, Business, Communication, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Together, these colleges offer more than 60 undergraduate areas of study, eight pre-professional programs, and 19 graduate programs. Around 4,700 students are enrolled at Butler, representing 45 states and 49 countries. Ninety-five percent of Butler students will have participated in some form of internship, student teaching, clinical rotation, research, or service learning by the time they graduate. This community-centered immersion is coupled with classroom learning that nurtures critical thinking, effective communication, cooperative teamwork, and ethical decision making to prepare students for both professional success and to have lasting impact in their communities. Butler's overall placement rate for the class of 2012 was 94 percent, including 19 percent who went on to graduate or professional school.

Allison Shanks Engaged in Research at Butler University

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (07/23/2013)(readMedia)-- Allison Shanks of Bettendorf, IA, was one of 29 Butler University students who collaborated with a faculty mentor on original research during Butler Summer Institute (BSI) 2013. Working on campus from mid-May to mid-July, BSI Scholars examined issues in chemistry, biology, social sciences, music, and more, with the goal of producing work worthy of acceptance at a professional conference or in a professional publication.

Assistant Professor of Biology Nat Hauck mentored Shanks in research on "Chemicals in the jasmonic Acid Pathway's Affect on Systemic Acquired Resistance and Pathogen Related Genes in Moss."

Shanks received a $,2500 stipend, a housing allowance for campus accommodations, and free admission to Indianapolis cultural events from the Butler Center for High Achievement and Scholarly Engagement, which oversees BSI and other honors academic programs. BSI Scholars are selected in a competitive process; some 70 students applied for this year's program.
