Duffy one timed the game winner from the left wing circle.  The Mallards entered sudden death up two men after the Rush's Bob Preece and Kyle Stroh were called for back-to-back penalties in the final seconds of regulation.

The Mallards had battled from behind to tie game earlier in the third with a shorthanded goal from Gergo Nagy.  Nagy finished off a two-on-one rush with Vladimir Nikiforov- who assisted on all three Mallard goals- to knot the score at two at the 1:13 mark.

The Mallards found themselves trailing at the start of the third after Scott Brannon's sharp angle backhander gave the Rush snapped a 1-1 deadlock at 2:41 of the second period.

It was the Mallards who had first moved in front while on the power play when Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel's drive from the right point opened the scoring at 14:32 of the first period.  The Rush's Jesse Schultz charged down the slot to tie the score at one with just 58 seconds left in the first.

The Mallards return home for game three next Wednesday 7:05 p.m., game four next Friday at 7:05 p.m and game five next Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.  Should a sixth game be required, the series will shift back to Rapid City on Tuesday, April 15.  If the series goes to a seventh game, the Rush would host the deciding contest on Wednesday, April 16.

MOLINE, Ill. (March 31, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards have set their roster for the Central Hockey League President's Cup playoffs, the Mallards announced today.

In addition to the nineteen players on the roster proper, the Mallards have added rookie forward Joe Perry to fill one of two slots available for amateur players joining CHL clubs for the playoffs.  Goaltender Ty Rimmer and forwards Jim McKenzie and Mike Hellyer have returned to the roster for the playoffs while forward Gabriel Levesque has been placed on 14-day injured reserve and forward Jordan Lane and goaltender Eric Levine have been left off the postseason roster.

Rimmer returned to the Mallards today after being recalled by the American Hockey League's Oklahoma City Barons last Monday.  McKenzie has scored three goals and added five assists in 26 games since joining the AHL's Iowa Wild in January after starting the season with the Mallards.  Hellyer missed the Mallards' final 22 regular season games after being placed on injured reserve February 16 due to an upper body injury.

Levesque suffered a lower body injury yesterday during the Mallards' regular season-ending 5-3 win over the Missouri Mavericks.  Levine was signed last week when Rimmer was called up by Oklahoma City, and served as the Mallards' backup netminder in four games.  Lane picked up one assist and collected 88 penalty minutes in 56 regular season games.

Perry, 24, joins the Mallards after earlier this month leading Division III powerhouse St. Norbert College to its third national title in his four years as a Green Knight.  The 6' 2", 215-pound Nanaimo, British Columbia, native was named to the America Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-American first team after finishing the season tied for first in the nation with 24 goals and totaling 37 points in 32 games.  Perry earned NCAA tournament Most Valuable Player honors after scoring five goals and adding two assists in three tournament games.  He scored 50 times and recorded 106 points in 115 career collegiate games.   

In full, the active playoff roster is comprised of forwards Hellyer, McKenzie, Matt Boyd, Justin Fox, Thomas Frazee, Jeff Lee, Jordan Mayer, Gergo Nagy, Vladimir Nikiforov and Mike Stinziani; defensemen Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel, Matt Duffy, Darren McMillan, Mike Monfredo, Nicholas Rioux and Tyler Yaworski; forward/defenseman Nick Grasso; goaltenders Rimmer and Thomas Heemskerk; and amateur forward Perry.

Flock Clinches Fifth Place with Win in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (March 29, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards tonight locked up an opening round Central Hockey League playoff match-up with Rapid City Rush by clinching fifth place with a 5-0 win over the host St. Charles Chill while the idle Rush was consigned to a fourth place finish by the third place Allen Americans' victory over the Denver Cutthroats this evening.

The best-of-seven first round series will start with games one and two next Friday and Saturday in Rapid City before the Mallards return home for game three on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:05 p.m. and game four on Friday, April 11 at 7:05 p.m.  If a fifth game is necessary, it will be played on Saturday night April 12 at 7:05 p.m. at the iWireless Center.  Should a sixth game be required, the series will shift back to Rapid City on Tuesday, April 15.  If the series goes to a seventh game, the Rush would host the deciding contest on Wednesday, April 16.

Thomas Heemserk made 22 saves and Gergo Nagy scored twice as the Mallards blanked the Chill 5-0 in what was the Mallards' penultimate regular season game.  The victory was the Mallards' (32-23-10, 74 points) third in a row overall and second in as many evenings in St. Charles while the defeat means the tenth place Chill (11-49-6, 28 points) finish the season on a nine game losing streak.

The Mallards took a 1-0 lead when Nagy's centering pass caromed in off St. Charles defenseman Zack Josepher at 10:19 of the first period.  Mike Stinziani doubled the advantage with just two seconds left in the first by roofing the puck from the doorstep.

The Mallards outshot the Chill 18-4 in the second period but were not rewarded for their dominance in the middle frame until Jordan Mayer's tip-in stretched the lead to 3-0 with just a minute and 22 seconds remaining in the second.

In the third period, the Mallards put the game away with a pair special teams break away goals.  Jeff Lee's shorthanded goal stretch the margin to 4-0 at 6:13 of the third.  Nagy's power play goal capped off the win with just 52 seconds remaining.

The Mallards return home for their regular season finale tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. against the Missouri Mavericks.  Tomorrow is Fan Appreciation Day at the iWireless Center.  Fans can bring their skates to tomorrow's game and skate with the Mallards after that tilt.  In addition, all fans in attendance will receive a coupon good for a free bag of popcorn at iWireless Center concession stands.

MOLINE, Ill. (March 27, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards will host games three and four of their best-of-seven opening round Central Hockey League playoff series Wednesday night, April 9 and Friday night, April 11 at 7:05 p.m. and, if necessary, will play the fifth game of that series on home ice on Saturday evening, April 12 at 7:05 p.m., the Mallards announced today.

Playoff tickets go on sale tomorrow at the iWireless Center box office, online at ticketmaster.com, at Ticketmaster outlets or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.  All tickets (other than glass seats) for the April 9's game three will be available for just $2.  Glass seats for all playoff games are $25.  Seats for games four and, if necessary, game five will be available for $7, $10 and $25.

The Mallards, who clinched a playoff berth last weekend, are in fifth place in the CHL with three regular season games remaining.  The Mallards can still finish anywhere between fifth and eighth and are guaranteed they will play the first two games of round one and, if necessary, games six and seven on the road.  The Mallards will open the postseason next week on a date to be determined against one of four potential opponents- the Missouri Mavericks, Denver Cutthroats, Allen Americans and Rapid City Rush. 

Should the Mallards advance to the second round, all tickets (not including glass seats) for any weeknight home games will be available for just $3 while seats for any round two home tilts played on Friday, Saturday or Sundaycould be had for $10, $12 and $25.  

The Mallards close out the regular season this weekend.  They meet the Chill in St. Charles tomorrow night andSaturday evening before returning home for their regular season finale Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Missouri Mavericks.  Sunday is Fan Appreciation Day at the iWireless Center featuring prize giveaways, a postgame skate with the Mallards, free popcorn and a game worn jersey auction.
