Adler Theatre, 136 East Third Street, Davenport IA
Even though many fans of The Sound of Music know this legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein musical by heart, audiences will be in for a thrilling treat on February 8 when the Adler Theatre's Broadway at the Adler series hosts the show in its nationally touring presentation directed by Jack O'Brien, the three-time Tony Award winner who directed Broadway's original production of Hairspray.
Set in 1938 Austria, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She consequently falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp, who is eventually ordered to accept a commission in the German Navy despite his opposition of the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children, and numerous songs from the show have gone on to become beloved standards, including “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev-ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and the classic title tune.
The original Broadway production received five 1960 Tonys including Best Musical, and later than decade, its film 1965 version received five Oscars including Best Picture. O'Brien, the director of The Sound of Music's current touring presentation, received Tonys for Broadway's Hairspray in 2003, Henry IV in 2004, and The Coast of Utopia in 2007, with his latest theatrical work receiving some of the best reviews of the stage veteran's career. Variety magazine wrote that “O'Brien brings shimmering novelty and a fresh take on The Sound of Music,” and the Hollywood Reporter called the show “an unabashed paean to the healing power of art.”
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance of The Sound of Music on February 8 are $40.50-68, and can be reserved by calling (800)745-3000 or visiting AdlerTheatre.com.
