SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is sponsoring legislation to require insurance companies to provide coverage for 3D mammograms.
"We know that proper screening and treatment saves lives in the fight against breast cancer, and it’s important every woman in Illinois has access to the best technology,” Smiddy said. “3D mammography is proven to be more accurate and effective at detecting breast cancer. It is crucial to have the proper treatment for breast cancer to prevent what can be a fatal disease; early detection can save lives.”
Rep. Smiddy is the chief co-sponsor of Senate Bill 466, which passed the House and Senate. Under Senate Bill 466, insurance companies would be required to cover the cost of digital 3D mammography, which is better in detecting invasive tumors and avoiding false alarms. As an advocate for access to screening and treatment for women’s cancers, Smiddy has supported measures to fund the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program and sponsored House Bill 3673 to require insurance coverage for medically necessary MRI screenings for women at high-risk of developing breast cancer.
“I want to do everything in my power to ensure that every mother, daughter and sister has a chance to beat breast cancer and call themselves survivors,” Smiddy said. “As a state Representative, I represent women who are strong, bold and courageous. These brave women deserve the best treatment and care.”
