SPRINGFIELD – The Abraham Lincoln Association announced that in conjunction with the books’ authors, they are donating copies of two recent, popular books about Abraham Lincoln to all 810 public and academic libraries in Illinois. The books will be distributed through the Illinois State Library's Illinois Center for the Book.
“Abraham Lincoln loved to read, and a main part of the Lincoln Association's mission is promoting knowledge of our 16th President, so this book donation is a perfect fit,” Abraham Lincoln Association President Kathryn Harris said. “Now these two well-researched and beautifully illustrated books will always be within a just few miles of everyone in Illinois, ready for free enjoyment and inspiration.”
The two books, Abraham Lincoln Traveled This Way – the America Lincoln Knew and A Day Long to be Remembered – Lincoln in Gettysburg were both written by famed Lincoln author and historian Michael Burlingame and illustrated by noted landscape photographer Robert Shaw. The books should be available at libraries starting April 22.
Abraham Lincoln Traveled This Way is a look back through the window of time into Lincoln's world. It explores the places and the land that were a part of Abraham Lincoln's life, from his early years in Kentucky and Indiana, through the 29 years he lived in Illinois, until he went east to Washington, D.C. to serve as President. The book is a collection of images and text that takes readers to more than 70 Lincoln historic sites and dozens of other locations Lincoln traveled, including eighteen National and State Historic Sites, two National Memorials, and a National Monument. The book is a culmination of five years of research and hundreds of days of photography in ten states and the District of Columbia.
A Day Long To Be Remembered tells one of the greatest American stories, Lincoln's central role in the events of Gettysburg. Shaw's images are woven together with Burlingame's writing and Lincoln's telegrams, letters, and speeches to create a dramatic exploration of Lincoln and the Gettysburg story. The book covers the invasion of Pennsylvania, the Battle of Gettysburg and the end of the Gettysburg Campaign, leading to the development of the first national cemetery on a battlefield. The story culminates with Lincoln's trip to Gettysburg for the dedication ceremony and his delivering of the immortal Gettysburg Address. This is the first book to include a complete, high quality collection of all the surviving photographs from November 19, 1863.
