DAVENPORT, IOWA (August 23, 2023) — The Taming of the Slough Adventure Triathlon, scheduled Saturday, September 16, 8AM, to take place in the Sylvan Slough, on Sylvan Island, and on the I-74 bridge, combines paddling, mountain-biking, and running for an athletic challenge and an exciting race. Adventure triathletes and anyone looking to push themselves in kayaking, mountain biking, and running — and, naturally, those who think they are — are invited to register for a place in the three-tiered event.

Awarded categories include:

  • Men’s Individual
  • Women’s individual
  • Men’s Masters (fifty-plus)
  • Women’s Masters (fifty-plus)
  • Youth (under eighteen)
  • Two-Team: Men, women, and co-ed: Two members (canoe or kayak) complete all legs of the race. Team result is the average of individual times.
  • Three-Team: Men, women, and co-ed: Three members complete a relay of paddle, bike, and run.
  • Corporate Adventure Challenge (three-Person Relay) Winning group receives THE ROCK.

The packet pick-up for participants will take place at Bent River on Thursday, September 14, 5-7PM. The Timing-chip hand-off will take place at the Bass Street YMCA, located at the foot of 17th Street in Moline.

The paddling leg of the Slough is 2.5 miles, while the mountain-biking part is 7.5 miles. The run is two miles on riverfront bike trail and onto the bridge and back.

Tune up for Taming: River Action holds Tune Up for Taming, practices where the Traditional Race Course is open to racers and the public alike, on Thursdays leading up to the race. Meet at the Bass Street YMCA to practice the paddle and mountain bike courses from 5:30-7PM, August 31 and September 7.
