DAVENPORT, IOWA (February 25, 2025) — The Quad City area is taking proactive measures to address the risk of flooding with a community-focused Flood Preparedness Workshop scheduled for March 1, 2025, 10AM-2PM, at Modern Woodmen Park, located at 209 S Gaines St, Davenport, Iowa.
This workshop, hosted by River Action Inc in collaboration with the cities of Bettendorf, Buffalo, Davenport, Moline, Rock Island and Scott County, and various stakeholders, is designed to equip property owners with the knowledge and tools needed to reduce flood risk.
As a water-rich community bounded on the east by the Rock River and traversed by the Mississippi River and over 1,900 miles of creeks and streams, the risk of flooding in the Quad Cities is a reality. “We have assembled a great team of resources to help our community prepare for floods and defend their property from stormwater overland flows and river flooding,” said Kathy Wine. “This workshop is an invaluable resource for property owners who want to learn about their specific risks and how to better prepare for potential flooding.”
Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage one-on-one with experts, learn essential flood damage reduction techniques, and gain insights on how to prepare their properties. The agenda includes demonstrations on filling and placing sandbags, access to free low entry point elevation surveys, and discussions with city floodplain representatives from multiple municipalities.
Attendees can also look forward to connecting with a variety of flood defense system vendors, exploring the spring flood forecast, learning about flood insurance facts and myths, and interacting with representatives from FEMA Region 7, the Bi-State Regional Commission, and the Scott County Emergency Management Agency, and several other agencies and stakeholders.
The workshop is a key part of a larger local initiative aimed at developing a regional FEMA Community Rating System Program for Public Information, known as the Quad Cities Multijurisdictional Program for Public Information (QCMPPI). Robbin Dunn, Davenport Public Works Communications and Preparedness Manager, remarked, "This exciting opportunity for property owners is the result of a collaboration among River Action Inc, the cities of Bettendorf, Buffalo, Davenport, LeClaire, and Moline, and Rock Island and Scott Counties, the Quad Cities Realtors Association, and community residents. We are thrilled to be a part of this regional effort."
This workshop is free to the community, and property owners are encouraged to take advantage of this resource. For more information, please visit riveraction.org/workshop.
