DAVENPORT, IOWA (April 1, 2020) — Gilda’s Club is happy to say that we are still taking applications for Camp Genesis. During this time of social distancing, children may need something to look forward to. Gilda’s Club Quad Cities is monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely, and will make adjustments if needed, but as of this time, we are expecting to still be able to hold our camp and are actively taking applications!
Camp Genesis is a free week-long, residential sleep-away camp held from June 21-26, 2020 at Camp Shalom (6262 Caves Road Maquoketa, IA 52060) for children entering grades 4-9 who are directly impacted by cancer. This impact can be their own diagnosis, a parents, sibling’s, grandparent’s, etc. Camp Genesis is a free camp opportunity thanks to Genesis Cancer Care Institute.
During the week, kids will have the opportunity to have a full traditional camp experience (cabins, archery, swimming, etc.) along with sessions with Gilda’s Club staff. The experience also includes a field trip to Genesis Cancer Care Institute to meet some of the staff and learn more about how cancer is treated.
"We can help each other think it through," 10-year-old former camper Alexander said when asked why Camp Genesis is important.
Sarah, age 14, added, “Realizing there are other people who are going through similar situations.”
This specialty camp is a collaborative effort with Gilda’s Club, Camp Shalom, and Genesis Cancer Care Institute.
Applications are due Thursday, April 23, 2020.
