CORALVILLE, IOWA (May 28, 2024) — Iowa celebrated a remarkable success with this year's Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, with over forty schools from across the state participating in the event. This strong turnout has earned Iowa the distinction of being ranked eleventh in the nation for the most schools participating per capita in this important initiative.
On May 8, communities across Iowa came together to promote active transportation and healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. Students, parents, and educators embraced the opportunity to walk, bike, or roll to school, highlighting the benefits of reducing traffic congestion, cutting down on pollution, and fostering a sense of community. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by all participants were truly inspiring.
"We are thrilled with the level of participation and the positive impact that Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day had on our communities," said Matt Burkey, Safe Routes to School Coordinator at the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. "The event not only promoted physical activity and environmental awareness but also brought people together in a meaningful way. Achieving eleventh place nationally for schools participating per capita is a testament to Iowa's dedication to these important values."
The success of this year's event demonstrates a growing awareness and commitment to creating safer, healthier, and more connected communities through active transportation. Schools reported increased engagement from students, parents, and local organizations, all working together to make this day memorable and impactful.
As Iowa continues to lead by example, the hope is that more schools and communities will join the movement in future years, further promoting the benefits of walking, biking, and rolling to school. The support and enthusiasm seen this year pave the way for even greater participation and positive change in the years to come.
