In 2014 marimba soloist Matthew Coley began the Heartland Marimba Festival to celebrate the marimba, its history, and its performers and music. Each year the Festival has grown and in 2017 it now encompasses the HMCollective, and summer touring group of professionals/apprentices performing in eleven cities across the heartland, along with the HMQuartet, HMF Publishing, and the HMF Academy.

HMC 2017 consists of Matthew Coley, the artistic director of HMF, two apprentices, and intern, and a returning professional. Jaime Esposito is an apprentice artist and is from Dallas, TX. She received her masters degree in percussion performance from the University of North Texas. Jaime was a student at the HMF Academy 2016 in Cedar City, Utah and a winner of the HMF Performer’s Competition in 2016. Ed Cunneen is an apprentice artist with HMC and is from Mesa, AZ. He received a bachelors of music in percussion performance from Arizona State University and was a student of HMQ member Joe Millea. Bridget Olenik has been an artist with HMF since 2014. She now teaches music fulltime at Urbana University in Ohio. And Scott Eiklenborg has been interning with HMF and Matthew since January. He is percussion performance major at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA.

The Heartland Marimba Collective will present a series of 11 concerts from June 8th to July 11st. All events are open to the public (dates above) and feature a fun and festive selection of music including tangos, ragtime, patriotic music, and classical favorites.

HMF (HMC & HMQ) seeks to connect the public with the immediately entertaining qualities of the marimba. Each concert is designed to have something that will speak to everyone. Additionally, artists will talk about the instruments and the music they play during concerts. HMF always welcomes audience members to come on stage to explore the instruments after the concert and ask questions. Marimba performance encompasses a unique symbiosis of visual and aural splendor; each performer glides up and down the instrument using their whole body to masterfully produce the appropriate sounds with four finely crafted mallets. The fact that the beautiful sound of the instrument is produced from Honduran rosewood bars, the “singing wood,” adds to the magic of the experience. Coming to an HMF concert you can expect to hear compositions by Bach, Rossini, and Bizet, new modern premieres by renowned composers, works composed by the performer themselves, and tangos and other dances!

Matthew Coley has performed concerts and taught master classes in over 30 US states and 10 countries. He established the Heartland Marimba Festival in 2014 to build an organization devoted to the art of contemporary classical marimba and to providing more opportunities for students, artists, composers, and communities. Matthew’s performing has been described with phrases like "off-the-charts" (John Cook, Westminster Presbyterian Fine Arts Series, Des Moines, IA) and "delivering virtuoso…exquisite performances on marimba" (Lauren Warnecke, See Chicago Dance online). He has four critically acclaimed solo albums to his name and has appeared on several other released compact discs as a performer and composer with artists and ensembles such as cellist Barbara Haffner, marimbist Mark Ford, the Iowa/Hungary Percussion Project, and the University of North Texas Percussion Ensemble. HMF is on track to be a widespread, nonprofit organization with many subsidiaries: touring ensembles (Heartland Marimba Quartet and Collective), Academy, Publications, SoundW.A.Y.S. (a music workshop for youth ages 4-13 and community adults), and community outreach. Visit www.hearMatthewColey.com and www.HeartlandMarimbaFestival.com.
