Discussion of Iowa End-of- Life Option Act to follow On January 30, 2018, Compassion & Choices volunteers will host a free screening of the Sundance Film Festival, award-winning documentary How to Die in Oregon at the Bettendorf Library, 2059 Learning Campus Drive. The one hour film is shown at 6:00. This film explores real life responses to Oregon's "Death with Dignity Act"; the first law in the U.S. to authorize the practice of medical aid in dying for the terminally ill. The film follows Cody Curtis, a married 52-year- old mother of two who is dying of liver cancer and preparing to utilize the Death with Dignity law. A second story covers Nancy, a widow who volunteers with the Washington Death with Dignity campaign to fulfill her dead husband's final request that medical aid in dying be legalized in their home state of Washington. Rep. Brian Meyer (D-Des Moines) and Sen. Joe Bolkcom (D-Iowa City) introduced the Iowa End-of-Life Options Act (SF 215/ HF 299) modeled after Oregon’s twenty-year- old law. Stay for a discussion immediately following the film to learn more. ###
