CLINTON, IOWA (August 1, 2019) — The Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, "Clinton, Iowa's Children's Museum," is starting August off with construction and constellations. On Wednesday, challenge yourself with engineering games. On Friday, discovery the secrets of the stars, then come read with Rachel Cotton on Saturday morning at Storytime Saturday. Don’t miss the Starlab Planetarium on Saturday, August 10. Each of these programs is free with regular museum admission or membership. Also, a reminder that the Discovery Center is a Blue Star Museum, granting free admission to active-duty military and their families through Labor Day.

WOW Wednesday: STEM Engineering Challenge

Wednesday, August 7, 2-5PM, is a WOW Wednesday at the Discovery Center, sponsored by Clinton Lions Club. Make your way to the Please-Touch-Table and start building. This week, you can challenge yourself with engineering games, create your own cool structures, or just have fun building.

Miss Jean is also here every WOW Wednesday, with her chess, juggling, and logic puzzles. Miss Jean teaches beginning chess to all, from preschoolers through adult, or she will play a strategic game with an opponent to match their skill level. Additionally, she loves to juggle and can teach anyone of any age to become a successful juggler. Also, she has on hand three large cases of logic puzzles, construction materials, and hands-on brain-teasers to fascinate any age. She can teach anyone; all ages and abilities are welcome.

WOW Wednesday is perfect for school-aged kids and their families and is a great activity for a summer afternoon. WOW Wednesday is drop in with no pre-registration required — it is an enrichment program with no extra class fee.

Funtime Friday: Starlab Planetarium

Friday, August 9, 10AM, is Funtime Friday, sponsored by Clinton Kiwanis Club and Alliant Energy Foundation. Explore space and learn about the constellations while you’re inside an inflatable galaxy. In the Starlab Planetarium, you’ll be amazed at the wonders of space and the stories of the stars. As always, this program includes a snack and story to go with the stellar theme. This popular program is designed for pre-schoolers and their grown-ups, although all age children are welcome anytime, especially during summer vacations when everyone is out of school.

Storytime Saturday: “Starry Night”

Every Saturday during this summer at 10AM is Storytime Saturday with Cotton. Enjoy a good book (or two!) on a Saturday morning with Rachel Cotton, an Americorps Literacy Volunteer. This week’s theme is “Starry Night.” Cotton will bring her passion for books, reading, and fun; and many will know her from her work at Eagle Heights Elementary this year. Running less than an hour each Saturday, the program is designed to engage all levels of readers — emerging to proficient — and promises to be great family fun. A FREE enrichment program with your regular museum admission!

Starlab Planetarium

The Starlab Planetarium will be open for one special day of stellar learning on Saturday, August 10. Showtimes start promptly at 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM. This 25-foot, inflatable planetarium can hold up to 20 people and has a rotating light source in the center that projects constellations onto the structure's ceiling. The planetarium is on loan from Morrison Public Library, and admission to the exhibit is free with regular museum admission or membership.

Blue Star Museum

Again this year, the Discovery Center will participate in the Blue Star Museum program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. This program begins on Armed Forces Day, May 18, and runs through Labor Day, September 1. As a Blue Star Museum, the Discovery Center will give free museum admission to active-duty military and their families (up to five family members).  Active military includes: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard, and Reserve Members.
