DAVENPORT, IOWA (May 15, 2023) — Young people cry out for help all over Iowa and rural Illinois. They have been disrespected, bullied, name-called, and physically attacked — all because of who they are as LGBTQ+ human beings. Many feel isolated and lonely and commit acts of self-harm. The rhetoric is amplified by targeted hate legislation that came out of Iowa this Spring, and by politicians currying votes in stoking fear of “the other,” who isn’t “like us.”

We will not be silenced! On Thursday, June 1, 6-8PM, at the Metropolitan Community Church of the Quad Cities, One Human Family QCA (OHF QCA), Progressive Action for the Common Good (PACG), and QC Pride are sponsoring a free NOH8 Photoshoot.

The NOH8 Campaign began as a protest against Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriages in California before being ruled unconstitutional. Today, the campaign combats discrimination and bullying of all kinds. Members of the community who wish to participate have duct tape over their mouths (optional) to symbolize voices currently being silenced by hate — with the iconic "NOH8" painted on one cheek.

"Every photo shoot is a chance to create visibility and celebrate diversity — we have always seen the NOH8 photo as a tool to create dialogue. Social media has changed the face of activism and how we connect, but it has also shown us how we all have influence and the ability to contribute to those conversations worldwide,” NOH8 Co-Founders Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley said. “Everyone has a voice, and we never want to take that for granted. At a time when the message of NOH8 is more important than ever, we want to thank One Human Family QCA and our sponsors for creating an opportunity for all voices to be heard."

NOH8 staff will apply the iconic symbols when Individuals who want to have their photo taken arrive. A plain white shirt is suggested to match the signature style of the NOH8 photos.

The partnership between One Human Family and the NOH8 Campaign is natural as the mission of OHF QCA is “to protect the life and dignity of all people in all places in the greater QCA area.” OHF QCA, PACG, QC Pride, and Metropolitan Community Church of the Quad Cities consistently supports, affirms, and seeks to increase LGBTQIA+ visibility in our community. Everyone needs safe space, not only to be who they are, but to thrive.

“We want people from throughout the Quad Cities and beyond to see our community as very inclusive of all. Regardless of your sexuality or gender identity, we will support you here,” said Rev Rich Hendricks, Pastor of MCC QC and Co-Convenor of OHF QCA. “This is a key time for LGBTQ+ folks and our allies to be visible and not hide our faces.”
