The Buttertones at the Raccoon Motel -- September 1.
Sunday, September 1, 7 p.m.
Raccoon Motel, 315 East Second Street, Davenport IA
Hailed by AllMusic as "a moody Los Angeles-based surf rock/garage outfit with a Merseybeat heart and a take-no-prisoners punk attitude," The Buttertones headline a September 1 concert at Davenport's Raccoon Motel, the group's 2020 recording Jazzhound lauded by Album of the Year as "a fun and playful affair that will make you feel as though you and your surfer buds are getting ready for a night out in the '60s."
As detailed at AllMusic.com, "The Buttertones were formed in 2011 as a bedroom project for singer/guitarist Richard Araiza, drummer Modesto Cobian, and ex-Cherry Glazerr bassist Sean Redman. After issuing their cassette-only debut via Los Angeles-based garage pop label Lollipop, the band expanded into a five-piece, adding a second guitarist in Dakota Boettcher and bringing in saxophone player London Guzmån. Their sophomore long-player, American Brunch, appeared in 2015, and the following year saw the Buttertones ink a deal with Innovative Leisure, with whom they would release Gravedigging in 2017. A year later, they returned with their fourth full-length, and second for Innovative Leisure, the Jonny Bell-produced Midnight in a Moonless Dream.
"Following the album's release, the group's live activity was put on hold as drummer Cobian dealt with an eye infection that left him having to wear an eye patch. Also around this time, Boettcher parted ways with the group. In 2020, a rejuvenated Buttertones returned with their fifth full-length, the Bell-produced Jazzhound." Hailed by Ones to Watch as a "reverb-soaked post-punk gem," Jazzhound was additionally described as a "coming-of-age not defined by a particular generational shift ... . The Buttertones make the rare sort of music that simply does not go out of style." Meanwhile, The Daily Californian raved, "The band has reined in the energy that propelled them to success, crafting a sophisticated sound that will keep them at the top for a long time. The Buttertones are confident in Jazzhound — and rightfully so. It’s an album that shows not only the band’s immense growth, but also the Buttertones’ dedication to music and the effort they’ve put into releasing a quality record."
The Buttertones headline their Davenport engagement on September 1 with an additional set by New Misphoria, admission to the 7 p.m. concert is $33.06, and tickets are available by visiting TheRaccoonMotel.com.
