· This Tuesday brings the long-awaited domestic release of the Super Furry Animals' newest, Rings Around the World, recently receiving MOJO magazine's pick as "Album of the Year." The stateside CD issue of this monster U. K. hit bears the XL Recordings imprint and comes packing a North America-only bonus disc with seven extra tracks. But the best desserts get served last, as the companion DVD is loaded with sweets: The band commissioned 18 graphic designers and animators - and one hairdresser - to tackle a song on the album and produce a mini-movie. More examples of short film than MTV "videos," the 18 unique visions have my interest. Take another slice: There are 19 remixes as well, all exclusive to this high-concept DVD project. Next month the band will embark on a three-week U.S. tour after an appearance on Conan O'Brien's Late Night show. The tour promises visual elements that will mirror the DVD's aggressiveness, featuring a special traveling sound system that creates the surround-sound experience in concert.

· Fans of the Dandy Warhols should search out a copy of the band's new CD single, "Get Off." The import-only release features two special acoustic tracks, "Stars" and "Eight Days a Week," recorded live at the Virgin Radio studios.

· Cool cover alert! This Tuesday's release of Live with a Little Help from Our Friends, Vol. 2 from the crowd-pleasing Gov't Mule has two nifty nuggets within: Allman brethren Allen Woody and Warren Haynes lead the band through a 20-minute version of Lowell George's "Spanish Moon" and Frank Zappa's "Pygmy Twylyte." Also of cover interest this Tuesday is Vitamin Records' new Leaves from the Tree: A Tribute to the Music of Peter Gabriel. The 13-track set features contributions from Jody Watley, The English Beat's Dave Wakeling, and Julee Cruise & Supa DJ Dmitry.

· The elusive Gabriel has been surfacing lately, as his long-awaited album, Up, should see the light of day this year. He'll show up as well as a collaborator with Naughty by Nature on its new set, Iicons, due April 23 on the TVT label.

· In the "If I Could Talk to the Animals" department: This week the Neurot Recordings label releases a truly "industrial" recording, as all the sounds from the Tribes of Neurot: Adaptation & Survival CD are recordings of insects. Spun through an electronic smorgasbord of synthesizers, the project attempts to offer a psychedelic insight into their bizarre and hidden world, a multidirectional collage of critter din.

Television Alert:

The Late Show with David Letterman welcomes The Chieftains tonight; The Tonight Show with Jay Leno hosts Jewel tonight, India.Aire on Monday, and Lifehouse on Tuesday; Late Night with Conan O'Brien features Harry Connick Jr. this evening overnight, and the Reverend Horton Heat on Friday overnight; The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn checks into Clinic on Monday overnight; and Last Call with Carson Daly does the couch thing with Nelly Furtado this evening overnight, Mystikal on Thursday overnight, Cracker on Monday overnight, and Alicia Keys on Tuesday overnight.
