For the fourth performances of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra';s 2017-18 season, conductor Mark Russell Smith and his musicians take audiences on a figurative trek across the Atlantic in Postcards from Venice, a program of wit, charm, and musical mischief with a special performance by trumpet soloist Matthew Onstad.
A Wisconsin native, Onstad was appointed to the Francis Neiswanger Memorial Principal Trumpet chair in the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Mead Witter School of Music, where he recently won the institution's coveted concerto competition. Ostad serves the UW department of music as a project assistant performing with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet ensemble-in-residence, and has received numerous awards including the James R. Smith Orchestra Award for Leadership and Success. He has also been a member of the 132nd US Army National Guard Band since 2012, and has frequently performed with the Madison and Oshkosh Symphony Orchestras.
In addition to featuring Onstad's solo debut with the QCSO on Arban's trumpet showcase Carnival of Venice, the Postcards from Venice program will boast Rossini's Overture to La scala di seta and Overture to L'Italiana in Algeri, Liszt's The Black Gondola, Verdi's prelude to La Traviata, Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, and Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins performed by Autumn Chodorowski, Tomer Marcus, Emily Nash, and Janis Sakai.
Tickets to the Masterworks IV concert are $8-58 at the Adler Theatre on Saturday and $8-39 at Centennial Hall on Sunday, and more information and reservations are available by visiting QCSO.org.
