Lots of Pavement fans are whetting their whistles as the first new solo music from band founder Stephen Malkmus hit the street this past week. I really like the new tracks I've heard from the just released Discretion Grove EP - definitely made to be played loud - so warm up those speakers, kids! Malkmus' new identity as a solo artist is staked out February 13 when Matador Records releases the new full-length album, which might or might not be entitled Swedish Reggae.
And dig this flashback to a golden age - a flexi-single of "Jo Jo's Jacket" can be found in the pages of the new issue of Magnet magazine, to hit stands any day now. ... Creed releases a tasty single this week in the U.K., as the CD and claret-colored vinyl seven-inch both feature an acoustic take on their "Arms Wide Open." ... This one looks to be spectacularly special, folks: The Stereophonics have announced a mid-February all-acoustic mini-tour of these United States. One of the premier smart British pop-rock bands, the group has never really reached a large audience here. A new album, J.E.E.P. (Just Enough Education to Perform), is due this spring on the V2 imprint. ... Another hot British band is also preparing for an unusual upcoming performance. Believe it or not, the Manic Street Preachers will play live in Havana, Cuba, on February 17 in the 5,000-seat capacity Marx Theatre, in what is being touted as the first rock band to visit and play in the Castro era. This much is very cool: The admission price to local residents is 25 cents. ... Fans of New York hardcore legends Type O Negative are treated to special re-mastered CD re-issues this Tuesday from Carnivore, the former project of lead singer Peter Steele. Both of the band's corpse-grinding late-1980s releases, a self-titled debut and Retaliation, are polished up on Roadrunner with bonus tracks, new photos, and expanded liner notes. ... This should prove to be very interesting. A second Sopranos soundtrack is due in March, with Bob Dylan performing his take on Dean Martin's 1962 hit "Return To Me." Other music is promised from Elvis Costello, A3, Cream, and Silvio Dante himself - "Little Steven" Van Zant. If you've been hooked into the Sopranos, the brilliant "soap opera for men" on HBO, you've no doubt thrilled to the driving buzz created by the show's tasteful soundtrack direction. Did you catch the night Nick Lowe's "The Beast In Me" closed down the credits? Pure perfection.
