Fronted by guitarist/vocalists and founding members Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd, the acclaimed alternative rockers of No Joy play a Daytrotter concert on April 8, the band's sound described by the New York Times as “a tingling, immersive experience,” and the musicians' talents inspiring Fader to state, “They know how to write a gorgeous song.”
While both of No Joy's founders are natives of Canada, White-Gluz was living in Los Angeles and Lloyd in Montreal when the duo began musically collaborating via e-mail – a corresponse that eventually led to White-Gluz's return to Montreal and their first show (with Hüsker Dü's Grant Hart) in December 2009. The pair continued to play locally, including a show with then-up-and-coming indie band Best Coast, and received considerable attention when that ensemble's Bethany Cosentino tweeted, “Dude, No Joy is the best band ever. Two hot blonde girls just shredding away. Sooooo amazing.”
No Joy consequently signed to the Mexican Summer label and released its first single “No Summer,” which enabled White-Gluz and Lloyd to book their own national U.S. tour, and later in 2010, their debut LP Ghost Blonde – recorded with recruited bandmates Garland Hastings and Michael Farsky – was met with wide critical acclaim. According to Pitchfork, “The guitars, loud enough to obliterate everything within 50 yards, create a balmy atmosphere where lacerating riffs and blurry strumming shares face time with ear-piercing feedback.” And since then, No Joy has released a quartet of lauded EPS – Negaverse, Pastel & Pass Out, Drool Sucker, and Creep – plus studio albums Wait to Pleasure and More Faithful, the latter earning 4.5 out of 5 stars from AllMusic.com and the rave “More Faithful is a masterpiece … easily offering the best songwriting and aural presentation the band has mustered yet.”
No Joy performs locally with opening sets by Archeress and The Golden Fleece, and tickets to the 8 p.m. concert are $10-12. For more information, visit Daytrotter.com.
