Mariee Siou at the Raccoon Motel -- November 3.

Sunday, November 3, 6 p.m.

Raccoon Motel, 315 East Second Street, Davenport IA

Praised by Brooklyn Vegan for songs that produce "a kind of ethereal, mythic-folk-rock that brings in soft lilting qualities," singer/songwriter Mariee Siou headlines a November 3 concert at Davenport's Redstone Room, the artist also lauded by PopMatters for her "style full of subtleties, capable of causing massive impact with a singularly gentle approach."

With her father Gary Sobonya a mandolin player of Polish and Hungarian descent and her mother Felicia of Spanish, Paiute, and Indigenous Mexican descent, Siou (formerly "Sioux") grew up in Nevada City, California, where she wrote verses since she was a young child. At 17, she traveled to Patagonia to volunteer at a school for Indigenous children where she taught herself to play the guitar, and in 2006, she debuted her first self-released album A Bundled Bundle of Bundles. A year later, she released her first studio album Faces in the Rocks, which featured her delicate acoustic guitar music alongside the Native American flute by Gentle Thunder, as well as mandolin played by her father. The album had a Native American theme to it, filled with references to nature and the Native American people. Since the debut of her first album, Siou has drawn comparisons from Joanna Newsom to Joni Mitchell, and has toured throughout North America and Europe.

She released a cover version of The Cure's "Lovesong" on the 2008 tribute record to The Cure titled Perfect as Cats, and Gift for the End, Siou's second album, was recorded between April 2010 and August 2011 in Placerville's Monsoon Studios and in the Nevada City's Sun Dial studios. Guest musicians were mostly friends and family members, and the recording was produced and arranged by Mariee's partner Sean Kae. Since then, the artist has also released 2012's Bonnie & Mariee, 2019's Grief in Exile, and last year's Circle of Signs, and in 2021, she began changing her stage name from Sioux, as named by her parents, to Siou, in an effort to decolonize her name.

Mariee Siou performs her headlining engagement in Davenport on November 3, admission to the 6 p.m. concert is $19.84, and tickets are available by visiting TheRaccoonMotel.com.
