Lily & Madeleine at the Raccoon Motel -- November 28.
Tuesday, November 28, 7 p.m.
Raccoon Motel, 315 East Second Street, Davenport IA
An Indianapolis-based folk-pop duo currently touring in support of their new album Night Swim, singers, songwriters, and sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz – better known by their stage moniker Lily & Medeleine – headline a November 28 concert at Davenport's Raccoon Motel, their latest recording inspiring No Depression to rave, "Their voices blend so beautifully it’s tempting to believe true love must exist somewhere."
The sibling musicians began singing together as high-school students, uploading home videos of cover songs to YouTube. On the strength of those videos, the Bloomington, Indiana-based producer Paul Mahern invited the Jurkiewiczes into his studio to record their first EP, The Weight of the Globe, when their class schedule permitted. With the help of Kenny Childers, they co-wrote their first original songs for that EP, and a video of Lily & Madeleine singing in Mahern's studio reached the front page of the news aggregator Reddit. The Weight of the Globe was consequently picked for a 2013 release by Sufjan Stevens's Asthmatic Kitty Records, and John Mellencamp asked the sisters to contribute guest vocals to the soundtrack of his musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.
In February of 2013, the Jurkiewicz sisters sold out their first live shows in Indianapolis, and later that fall, they made their national-TV debut on CBS This Morning in anticipation of their first, self-titled LP to be released at the end of October. In reviewing Lily & Madeleine, the New York Times argued that "the thing that flags them as extraordinary is their sibling vocal blend, deep and seamless and relaxed". In addition to promotional videos such as "Back to the River," directed by Allister Ann in support of The Weight of the Globe, and Lily & Madeleine's "Come to Me," directed by Tyler Jones, the folk-pop duo continued to release live videos of their acoustic performances in the studio directed by Nicole Lehrman and Stuart Hotwagoner, both of them graduates of Indianapolis' Bishop Chatard High School.
Following 2014's Fumes and 2026's Keep It Together, Lily & Madeleine released their fourth LP Canterbury Girls to favorable reviews in early 2019. Pop Magazine awarded the album a rating of five out of dive stars, praising it as "a beautifully balanced album" and adding that "Lily & Madeleine ask tough questions – about the world, about modern love, about themselves – but their mere delivery is graceful, vulnerable, and ultimately empowering." Their raves, meanwhile, have continued with their fifth and most recent album, whose early-October release led No Depression to rave, "Vivid memories of provocative encounters give Nite Swim a tantalizing edge.
Lily & Madeleine headline their Davenport engagement on November 28 with an additional set by Brian Dunne, admission to the 7 p.m. concert is $15, and tickets are available by visiting TheRaccoonMotel.com.
